  • It definitely looks like it's copyrighted, so no, you cannot use it without permission of the copyright owner.

  • I see, hopefully will be fixed in the next build.

  • It is actually fairly straightforward to pull the image assets out a browser game. However they are covered by automatic copyright in most countries which prevents other people using them. It's possible to extract the images out of most kinds of game though, so the main reason people don't steal artwork is because it's copyrighted rather than because it's difficult to get.

It is also extremely difficult to reverse engineer a project and get the .capx project back because all exported Javascript is obfuscated by Closure Compiler by default.

  • Let me try and cover everything that's been raised:

Beta releases: I tested this with the live version and could definitely choose a beta release and Steam downloaded and installed r117 correctly. (I did notice the dropdown box for beta releases seemed kind of "sticky", but closing and reopening the properties dialog seemed to fix it.) However if you have both the Free edition and the Personal edition installed, they should be sharing the same files, so you might need to set both to use Beta releases. If you have any other issues with beta releases I'd advise you contact Valve, since as far as I can tell everything is set up correctly on my end.

Portable version: if you install Steam on another computer and log in, it should allow you to use Construct 2 on there as well. Beyond that it's out of our control I'm afraid, you'd need to ask Valve for changes to that process.

Standalone license in addition to Steam copy: I'm not sure we can do this, since sending a standalone license amounts to a second independent copy of Construct 2, which would normally cost double. Since we aim to have simultaneous beta and stable releases on Steam (and x64 support soon), I don't see any disadvantage to buying the Steam version - you can still create desktop shortcuts and the like, you just need Steam running at the same time as C2 for license authentication. This is totally normal and how everything else on Steam works.

andreyin - you definitely can't install the version from our site over the Steam files. They are different builds (the license systems are different, as well as other changes). If there's an error you'll get the free edition, so you won't be able to use a license if you copy files over Steam.

  • Arima - could you send me the perf tests you used for C2? It's always useful to have projects to optimise for. I've got on my todo list algorithmic optimisations for collision detection. At the moment both CC and C2 always collision check against all objects in the layout (discarding far away ones with a quick bounding box test). While that's not very smart, C2 suffers more with the slower execution speed. A future version of C2 should only even iterate nearby objects for collision testing, which should bring it closer (and possibly even surpass in some cases) to CC's performance.

I wouldn't performance test creating or destroying objects - neither are well optimised, and I don't think any real projects bottleneck on it. But nice to see how well C2 still held up to CC!

(And as you figured out, it's only fair to measure delta-time when comparing performance, since FPS is nonlinear)

  • If you have both Free and Personal installed, does setting them both to use betas work?

  • I assume so, why would they reduce the limit?

  • We changelogged about this in r117. We're working out some issues with Ludei.

  • I'm afraid if your computer crashes and the system overwrites all your project files with junk, there's not much that we can do about that: Construct 2 will continue dutifully backing up the corrupt files. This is why it's important to set up hourly/daily/weekly backups in the Backups tab of Preferences, which is an existing way to save backups to a separate folder, disk or network location, which should be more robust against one particular storage media failing and hosing your work.

  • That's a pretty old blog post and our plans have changed - we're most likely not going to provide an EDK.

If you want to learn more about C2's internal structure, browsing the XML files in a folder project is a good place to start.

  • Try exporting for node-webkit in r117.

  • We already have 64-bit support in the version from our site, and we'll be supporting it on Steam soon too.
