  • Construct 2 has features that would be useful for moddable games, such as loading images from URLs and AJAX requesting array/dictionary/xml content. However making a game moddable is such a huge amount of effort I've never seen anyone complete it; it's a bit like saying "can I make an MMORPG?". In theory yes, in practice it's so much effort most people will never finish it.

  • From the manual entry on Event Variables:

lobal variables can be moved to another event sheet by cutting and pasting them. After being cut, references to the global variable will disappear because it has been removed; this is normal and nothing to worry about. When you paste the global variable, the references that disappeared will reappear again.

Note: global variables are on an event sheet, not a layout.

  • akaButters - PhoneGap's WebView does not include the GPU accelerated canvas, or even the fast javascript engine IIRC, of mobile Safari. It's not uncommon to get <10 FPS with PhoneGap.

  • Curious, is the reason that a C2 website would have similar disadvantages as a flash website because of the canvas framework?

It's simply because it's not an ordinary HTML page. That means to Google, it looks like an empty page. It can't easily access any of the content.

You can probably use HTML5 for decorative banners or adverts and such, but I still wouldn't even recommend using it for your site's navigation menu. Since Google can't see the links inside it, it might not even crawl your entire website! And again your pagerank could suffer significantly.

We can't control what people use Construct 2 for, but I do believe it's the wrong tool for the job if you want to design websites. It will only cause your website to be less successful, unless you use it for decorative or non-essential things (or games, of course!)

  • akaButters - it includes various checks and logging to help with development, which are removed when exporting. This also helps exported projects run faster after export. Also the HTML for exported projects is different, so it won't actually work to use the preview HTML for publishing.

  • You shouldn't work that way; if you change the size of the image, it can cause bugs in the engine, because information like the file size and image dimensions are generated at export time, and these are wrong if you overwrite images after exporting.

What's wrong with saving as a project? Then the artist just needs to edit images in the project folder, which is supported, rather than in the export folder, which is not supported.

  • App.JS fails to run the Rain Demo at all, it just shows a blank screen.

I'm not convinced it uses GPU acceleration yet, since Kiyoshi's post in another thread suggested WebGL was running with the Swiftshader software renderer.

Overall it looks like it's some way behind Awesomium - it's buggier and probably a lot slower. We're still focused on getting Awesomium working smoothly, this does not look like a compelling alternative yet.

  • I checked out App.JS and it failed to run the Rain Demo, just a blank screen. Also, the lines of code you removed from c2runtime.js are to detect the Swiftshader software renderer for WebGL, so it would probably be extremely slow if you allow that.

  • There's no browser standard on this at the moment I'm afraid. However some other platforms (like appMobi, CocoonJS and Windows 8 apps) allow an orientation lock option in the export or publishing phase.

  • That still amazes me, 3 MILLION cycles a SECOND! I love technology.

    Billion ;)
