  • When a new version of C3 is available, it asks if I want to update to it. If I say no, the popup disappears and I stay on my current version.

However, upon reloading C3, it automatically updates to the latest version and asks if I want to see the release notes.

This is very problematic for my team, as C3 updates can make some pretty major changes internally that affect files in source control, etc.

Switching to the LTS is an option we will probably do, but, you know, we like updates too, just when we're ready for them!

(None of us use C3 inside the browser, so we can't just stick to a version URL. We "install" editor.construct.net which should recommend the latest stable but not force users to it!)

  • I went to this link

    construct.net/en/make-games/releases/beta/r400

    and selected launch r400

when I was loaded it gave me those options update/not now

i clicked not now and then reloaded the page

the software was still on r400

    [hr try this
  • You can load a specific release from the releases page. If you browse to editor.construct.net it will always serve the latest stable release.

How about an option to not be reminded to update every time C3 is launched?

Right but if you "Install C3 as a desktop app" as detailed in the manual, this becomes a problem because it forces the latest version. It asks me once, then ignores my answer and automatically updates upon reloading.

Sure we could install a dedicated version URL but updating that might be a pain? I'd have to play around with it. I swore uninstalling wiped the UI, installed plugins, etc. but this latest time there was a prompt asking if I want to delete that or not.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads

Always open the link to the version you need.

  • I also install to a desktop app and doing so from a specified older version will still eventually force me to update when the next stable release drops. It's very odd and quite annoying.

  • This really always appears, it looks intrusive and starts to annoy.

After all, one day I can click update and unknowingly upgrade the engine version.

Maybe the C3 authors don't understand that not all projects can be immediately transferred to a new version, some have to be tested on parts of the audience.

This needs to be dealt with, you can't be so intrusive.

  • If you load the editor from editor.construct.net it always auto-updates. There's a complicated mechanism using a Service Worker to handle that which I think would be difficult to change, and besides I think it makes sense that the base domain always serves the latest stable release (it's not like a new user visiting for the first time wants to load an old release there). If you install Construct as a desktop app, it does exactly the same thing as the browser, so if you install from editor.construct.net that's still the update process you'll get.

If you load an old stable release in the browser it does still notify you. I actually thought we'd already added a setting to cover that, but I must have forgotten. I've added a setting to turn off update notifications for the next release, so you can make sure loading old releases doesn't keep prompting you to update. Note however this does not affect the update process for editor.construct.net: as the actual files served there are updated, then it will still update you even if you turned off update notifications, and so the editor still also shows an update notification to tell you that's going to happen.
