Notes

It's a new stable release of Construct! If you're updating from the last stable release r487.3 then this update includes changes from r488, r489, r490, r491, r492, r493, r494 and r494.2. Highlights include:

⭐ Support for 3D rotation for 3D shapes and a variety of 2D objects including Sprite, Text and Tiled Background, including when using mesh distortion

⭐ A new Billboard behavior to make it easy to rotate an object to face the camera; also support for 3D rotation with the Rotate behavior

⭐ Support for scale editing mode in the 3D editor for resizing objects

⭐ More 3D improvements including editing meshes in 3D, improved display and handling of gizmo and 2D/3D view toolbar (including setting to hide 2D/3D view toolbar), and proper support for 3D with the Mouse/Touch cursor over object/is touching object conditions

⭐ Support for exporting directly to a folder on disk without needing to extract a zip first; export settings are now also remembered per-project

⭐ 7 new examples and a new demo game 'Selene'

Note that as the legacy Z axis scale mode Normalized continues to be phased out, projects still using it will now show a deprecation message when you open them. For more information see the section on Z axis scale in the manual entry Deprecated features.

This release will be promoted to a new LTS release before the next stable release. We'll be starting a new beta release cycle soon. If you'd like to help test it when it's out, try the beta release opt-in: choose Notify me about updates for beta releases in Settings. Stay tuned for more updates!

  • On the one hand, I'm not the biggest fan of such attention to 3D, after the developers constantly stated that the engine is focused on 2D and they don't want to spend too much time redoing 3D things that other engines already do much better

On the other hand, it adds new use cases for the engine, and a lot of people wanted that, so maybe that's okay. I've also wanted to dive deep into 3D for a long time, and maybe this is a sign

If it helps, we are not aiming for absolute full 3D support, that would be an endless rabbit hole for our resources. Having said that, even providing a limited 3D feature set is still a lot of work!

  • 3D is a perfect focus to ensure the longevity of construct 3, everything an indie developer could want is now in the editor. Even games that are mostly 2d can benefit from these enhancements.

  • I've been doing euler rotation calculations manually for 2D object positions/meshpoints for slight 3D effects on 2D graphics. Finally I can just use a 3D object as a helper object (and use imagepoints for positions etc), this is just perfect!

So it's just not for pure 3D graphics. Very neat for certain 2D setups too.

  • Great work on the 3D additions!

  • Let's go!!!

An absolutely massive update! I love the new possibilities 3D rotation opens up, and the new billboard behaviour is awesome! Construct is pretty much the best 2.5D game engine & editor at this point, definitely the easiest to use one.

  • Let's face it, games aren't just about 2D sprites; half of them are 3D. So it's time to maximize the development of 3D objects.

  • Is there a way to rotate the mosaic? I need it on a diagonal plane viewed 3d from above to draw flooring.

  • Tween is broken when using the one-property to rotate 3D models using the "angle" attribute.

  • Great to have 3D rotation now, thank you!

However, it doest seem to work with containers yet, so it only works with rather simple 3D objects. It would be great if the 3D rotation would also affect other objects in a container, like it does in 2D.
