  • Nice idea, but the majority of the filesize of exported apps are PNGs (which are already run through PNGCrush to squeeze them even smaller) and Ogg Vorbis or MP4 AAC audio. Already-compressed data doesn't usually gain anything significant by being zipped.

The scripts could be zipped... but if your server supports deflate, it sends them to the browser compressed anyway!

  • I've seen this and it looks very interesting, but there are two problems - there's such little documentation I can't see any obvious way to actually use it, and it seems to require you set up a full blown XCode development system on a Mac. The reason I like PhoneGap so much is the build system is so simple. Without PhoneGap build, to make an iOS app you need to own a Mac, download XCode, download a bunch of SDKs, install everything and run the compiler. The whole system is designed for programmers. Same story for Android: you need to download hundreds of megabytes of the Eclipse IDE, Android SDK, configure the compiler correctly, and on and on. I did it myself and it was a massive headache, and I'm a programmer! And again for Symbian, and again for all the others. Compare that to PhoneGap Build: upload, wait a moment, done. If we tell people to get these development systems we're also obliged to help them get it working, which is really complicated, slow and difficult. So I see PhoneGap as being much more suitable for the non-technical easyness of Construct 2. AppMobi don't appear to have a similar online build service.

So PhoneGap is OK but not great - iOS 5 performance is OK for simple games and Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) should be similar, but it's still not quite there. I'm hoping for WebGL to be supported on phones soon. Our runtime already supports it and that should enable close-to-native performance in HTML5.

  • I'm surprised more people haven't taken up iOS web apps. Not only do they work on other kinds of phones, but they work very similarly to native apps thanks to Construct 2's offline support... and you even have the opportunity to set up your own payment system on your website and avoid the 30% cut Apple take, not to mention the fuss caused by their approval process!

Performance is a problem, but we've got ideas about how that can be improved in future too. We're a 2-man company - we don't have people and money to throw at problems like this :-\</p>

  • A simple way is to spawn a bullet object with gravity.

  • pedro.thiers: you use 'set text' instead of 'append text' so you'll only ever see one hi-score. The second time 'on hi-score' triggers, for example, the text object contains the first score but Set Text changes it to the second score.

Facebook's API is notoriously buggy. If it doesn't work for a day, then starts working, it probably is Facebook fiddling with it - I had that kind of issue even when developing the plugin, which was frustrating.

  • Oops, you're right, fixed for next build. You can use the layer name instead of number in events, which is probably more useful in case you re-order layers anyway.

  • Sounds download before playing once you've exported. You might want to use the 'preload' action to start loading it on start of layout or something.

  • newt - I don't understand, you're supposed to use a variable with a UID. What's wrong with that?

Instance indices are useless because they change all the time. If you delete the object with index 0 every single other instance changes its index. So if you stored an index in a variable it's now wrong. Why would you ever want to use that?

  • I do have to add UIDs were added specifically for remembering object instances in combination with the 'pick by UID' condition - I would say they are best suited for that, instance indexes won't really cut it since they change and UIDs never change.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • No, but C2 should try a different port if it's not available... maybe I can add a setting in future though.

  • The link I posted has instructions on how to identify your graphics card in Device Manager. What does it say there?

  • Did you try updating the drivers though? Drivers are updates you can download and often fixes problems like this. What graphics card do you have?
