  • I hate to say it Quazi, but your improvements look blown out and radioactive. It's good advice to blue things up a bit when you get into shadows, but I think you went way overboard on your example. The muted, desaturated palette in the original looks much more sophisticated to me, despite the lack of blue depth.

although its nicely rendered for an anime character, your colour ramps are very boring/ugly colours. try using less linear ramps and hue shifting to cooler colors as you get into the more shadowed parts of the ramp, and warmer as you get into the highlights. also realize that you should NEVER, EVER render gold with a simple brightness decreased yellow ramp, it comes off as some weird greenish stuff, and its a really ugly color, i opened up your file in paint shop pro, palletized it, and changed up all the colours to show you what i mean with all this. i also through in a contrasted version of mine in case you wanted to see it in a well, more contrasted tone.

(its an animated gif, wait for the frames to load)

    <img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1010927/girlsprites.gif">

also the rendering on the skirt is very odd and showing a ton of banding. i made some minimal edits to it as well, and don't be afraid to borrow colours from different ramps for use in other areas,

I took most of the colors straight off of refrerence pics of said character-- Even I thought the shades were bland. I even complained in chat about how freakin similar the hair and the skin was in color, lol.

But yeah, thanks for the advice though, and I will keep this in mind for my future projects.

  • I insist we need an art forum

  • i concur, thats actually a great idea

oh and about the edit i made, its simply to show what id change, but i agree if the colors he had were a stylistic choice they work great. it just seems to give off a rainy day, depressive feel and i'm not sure thats what you'd want on your character all the time, not to mention that the palette and the way you don't share colours between ramps was indicative of a beginner and i wanted to help give you some advice.

  • Its not a screenshot but here is a gel slime and a fuzzy tree.

  • I hear Slime and Fuzzy Tree friendships are the purest form of friendship.

i like it, but the light source on your blob and tree don't quite match up.

I love the slime, but the tree needs some different shading, and its texture seems a little off.

    Still, nice work.

It's the dark pillow-shading style outline around the entire perimeter of the leaves. That's what's throwing it off.

Last night I quickly drafted some ideas on IRC for you but you already left before I was done uploading. You might want to try a much more aggressive shading and use of tones. Also to shape things out: your trees have a kind of dark pillow shading around them but do note that when light is coming from the top you'll have to give the trees much more depth by making almost half of it, the underside, much darker than than highlights.

The same goes for the ground pretty much, you can easily use more of the darkest tile color to fill the undersides of the stones. The grass seems to have rather nice variety now, you could add more of the darkest color and make it feel like it's "flowing" on the rocks so it could look more separated from the rocky ground.

    Anyway, it's getting there nicely!

I cant see the image from where I am (photobucket is blocked) however... I do not reccomend that tutorial, as its more discussing the history of pixel art in games and less on teaching you how do make your own.

However, I highly reccomend this one for actual steps: http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=218

hanx, it's my first project created with construct so help me out a little bit

  • Hey everyone, I'm new here but figured I'd contribute. I'm a construct newbie so I figured I'd try to make a simple Tower Defense style game. I don't plan on making this into a real game, It's just something I'm using to learn and get familiar with the system.

The sprites are both my own and some public assets from the Tigsource Assemblee competition.
