  • If it's a simple test app, if nothing is moving at all, then C2 does not bother redrawing the screen. So your "idle" vs "moving" measurements are actually testing the difference between "doing nothing at all" and "redrawing the screen every frame".

  • Only the comments? Would that even make sense if they are taken out of the context of what they are describing?

  • How is your knowledge of vector math, matrices and quaternions? And are you as good at 3D modelling as you are at 2D art?

Every time anyone suggests 3D features, I think they are totally missing these two points. When we added the multiplayer feature to C2 it was a significant lesson in how everyone imagines it being perfect, a dream come true, you'll never need to learn anything, it will be so easy! But in practice it's still hard work, and I don't think you realise just how many obstacles there will be in your way, even with a tool like Construct 2 doing a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

  • That post is out of date now, since then we moved UID assignment to the editor so UIDs are predictable and can actually be viewed in the editor before running. That doesn't really affect the question though as far as I can see - either way, you can pass an instance to a function by passing its UID.

  • Elliott - look at the numbers in this thread, it's not consistently slower. But it's not always faster either. It adds extra CPU and GPU overhead in order to eliminate overdraw, and if there's not much overdraw then it will be slower.

So there's not much good news here. I'm particularly concerned that it crashes some devices or introduces display glitches. It's not much use if it's slightly faster on some devices, but crashes on others. So I don't think it's worth shipping this in a stable release. I think we will retract this feature and go back to back-to-front rendering only. Any objections?

  • Sisyphus & matrixreal - I'm looking for specific performance numbers with real-world games, not our artificial test that just creates piles of sprites. Can you report on any specific FPS numbers?

  • Do you think you could be genuinely productive with a touch interface?

  • Gosh, this isn't sounding very good at all. Either our implementation isn't fast enough (and I'm not sure what we could do to improve it), or front-to-back rendering just doesn't work very well with real-world games.

Does anyone have any positive feedback at all?

  • Uobicajeno - this was posted before Construct 2 was released! It's for Construct Classic.

  • I'd be surprised if setting object positions every tick really is the cause of your performance problems - it's one of the fastest and best-optimised parts of the C2 engine. Can you make a new empty .capx demonstrating the performance difference so I can investigate?

As for events, they are all run top-to-bottom and it stops running the event as soon as it comes across a false condition (unless it's an OR block). The C2 engine is not so poorly designed that it would do such wasteful work as running an event it already knows isn't going to run!
