  I haven't seen any reliable benchmarks showing XCode is faster than PhoneGap Build, nor is there any technical reason I'm aware of for that to be the case - I assume PhoneGap Build does exactly the same thing you'd do with XCode. So I think you should be able to get by OK with PhoneGap Build, apart from the fact it's usually software rendered and has much poorer performance than directCanvas or CocoonJS.

  Construct 2 never watermarks your game (or otherwise mentions the tool) when you have a license.

  I'm not sure I'm very comfortable with people using C2 as a "test" - I think you'll just select for people who can quickly figure out how to use an app they haven't seen before. That kind of person will appear to do better than someone who is slow at learning to use new software, even if they are overall better at whatever qualities you're really after. People familiar with other OSs like Mac and Linux may also be unfairly disadvantaged. And of course if someone has used C2 before and keeps quiet about it, they could seem amazing!

  Imagine a complete genius at game design who conveys everything by sketching pencil on paper, but who's useless at using C2. Surely you'd still want to accept them.

  pheno7 - we already have evidence HTML5 can reach the performance of our previous native engine. So I would say the performance benefit to implementing something like Haxe is rapidly diminishing. Meanwhile the additional complexity to the software stack by involving a cross-compiler is significant, and adds a whole new layer for things to go wrong or cause difficulties. We just don't have time to engage on a large project like that for a small benefit, especially if it breaks compatibility with third party plugins.

  I disagree with "The Pew Pew Manifesto". If Javascript is the assembly of the web, then we'll code in assembly.

  Sorry, there really is no workaround to getting WebGL shaders when they're not supported. You'll have to come up with an alternate effect for platforms which don't support WebGL.

  We don't support this in favour of the much easier to use PhoneGap Build system. Is there something you're missing from the PhoneGap Build service?

  Interesting, but software renderers are still pretty poor for games. There really needs to be an accelerated solution which is why we still recommend directCanvas or CocoonJS.

  theames - it ought to work on Windows 8, did you get any particular error message or problem?

  It's difficult for us to add support for XML parsing because CocoonJS and directCanvas don't support it directly - you might want to contact Ludei or appMobi about it.

  Objects don't strictly belong to any particular layout, because you can create any object from any layout on any other layout. Isn't the search box the quickest way to find objects anyway?

  It's an enormous amount of effort to go to for a non-guaranteed speedup (I don't see any benchmarks backing up their claim). To improve performance, the main thing we are looking for is WebGL support, which Cocos2d does not appear to support. So we will hold off writing any new engines unless we can get that.

  msv0001 - that's not quite right, in Construct 2 you can pass instances to functions by passing their UID as a parameter.

  sirLobito - you have to pass a string and check for each possible value of the string in subevents right now - unfortunately you can't create an object by name (due to the fact the obfuscator on export will change object names).
