• I'm starting to look at game promotion and I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions, good or bad, about using these social media:

* Facebook

* Twitter

* Google+

Also, how does a personal web site fit in? I'm really a noob on this kind of stuff and have just been heads-down on programming for a long time. I'm getting back to game programming.

Here are the sites I've created, but they're mostly blank:

Facebook: facebook.com/thulfram

Twitter:

Google+: Bob Thulfram (I'm not sure what a shortcut would be)

Site: thulfram.com (not populated)

I'm also asking what (in your humble opinion) is the relative importance of these sites to game developers and/or game customers. Also, since the Scirra Construct 2 Forum is the place I've started at and am very happy with, what do people use here?

If anyone wants to interact through these or give me advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

• Use all of them, and possibly add Reddit to that list!

For Facebook I'd create your own page (I can't tell easily if that's your personal page or not). It needs to be one like we have where people can like it.

I would consider all these sites as important. As an example, 35% of ALL our referred traffic comes either from HackerNews, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit.

It sounds a bit to me like your not really sure what you are trying to promote yet, you as yourself or a brand? It'll be a lot easier to go forwards when you know :)

• Such as it is, I created that page myself, but I'm sure it's lame! I'll look at yours, which should be a good model.

Expound a little bit more on what is the difference between myself and a brand. I just heard yesterday (for example) that if Newt Gingrich doesn't drop out now, he'll damage his brand.

Bob Thulfram =? Games I put up for sale?

As for the rest of what you said, very useful stuff to ponder. I'll look at Reddit.

Thanks for such a quick reply!!!

• Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
• I dug around on Facebook and figured out what you were talking about. I now have a new Facebook page called Bob Thulfram Books and Games.

At some point I'll be writing some books. Hey, if I get time, I'd like to write a book on Construct 2.

You can now like me. More to come! I'll check out Reddit next.

• All of the above Bob. Especially twitter and reddit. Just start using them all the time casually so you get a feel for them. Facebook is a little more obvious, but reddit and twitter aren't like the others. Also twitter is great in the sense that everyone is on it. It's the quickest way I can think of to get noticed by anyone you wouldn't normally be able to catch the attention of.

I just meant that the FB page wasn't set up correctly and I wasn't sure if you were advertising yourself as a developer or wanted to promote your games etc.

Good job on getting it all set up :) As Lucid says also Twitter is great as well! All the social networks need different types of interaction on them slightly, they all work differently so make sure you understand them

I finally figured it out. I now have two Facebook pages, one for me, and a second one for Bob Thulfram Books and Games. The second one is more for commercial stuff, which is my focus.

Thanks for helping and double thanks for giving me a Like on my page so it isn't so lonely.

Now I have to write a book to go with the games!

I'm starting to get the hang on Twitter. If I follow someone on Twitter, do they see my tweets? If I tweet to someone do they see tweets to me?

I followed AVWW (A Valley Without Wind) and now I'm seeing their tweets on my Twitter. AVWW is very interesting, by the way, a 2D sidescrolling RPG, but with a lot of different slants, all at the same time.

I'm definitely lost on Reddit. Do I create my own page?

Sorry for these noob questions!

• If someone follows you they will see your tweets
• If you follow someone else you see their tweets but they don't see yours

On Reddit just sign up an account and the best way to understand it is to just browse interesting posts and comment on them :)

Here's an overview of how it works:

http://www.reddit.com/help/faq#Whatisreddit

Reddit is basically split into lots of sub sites called 'subreddits'. You pick ones you're interested in, for example http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev and you comment on submissions and perhaps submit your own links as well for others to comment on.

Anyone can set up your own subreddit but it's probably best not too until you have a lot of users as otherwise it will be very empty :)

Thanks, that helps a lot. Now on to Google+. I know some programmers are gung ho on G+ and I'm reading an eBook on it now by Guy Kawasaki.

Again, thanks for all your help!

• So, I guess it would also be a good idea for me to use Reddit to promote my bolg...

• So, I guess it would also be a good idea for me to use Reddit to promote my bolg...Yes, do everything to promote everything you do!

• Heh, Reddit is a bit intimidating now. I'll scout for a bit becore I make my move.
