  • The "prizes" of construct3

Before all, I thank you again for your great work, 2021 was an exceptional year, with tons of very important additions, construct3 is more and more powerful and remains for me the best of all game design software!!!

You are a golden team, stay that way!

I would like to talk about the price of the construct3 license.

We rent the software, I'm not against it, it allows an important income for you, and I think that without that it would be very difficult for you to continue on your momentum, especially that computer developments, it is not given, especially when they are good, like your team!

    But I was wondering...

There are some here who use it, but never sell anything, and so they have to pay every year more than 100€ for a new license for 1 year and it's expensive.

So why don't you offer privileges to these people?...

Because we pay but the software is never ours, and it's also thanks to all these people who paid that you could make the software evolve.

For those who manage to bail out, no worries, nothing changes.

But those who don't sell anything, and who want to use the software in a personal way, they on the other hand, they only pay to use a superb software which does not belong to them.

So for those who have already paid for some license, who didn't get any money back, why not offer them some privileges?

I don't know, for example, a big discount on the price of a subscription for 1 year, this discount increases from year to year if there is no money coming in.

Or increase the limit of the free version, more events etc...

What I have a problem with is the people like me who pay to buy a license for construct3 but never sell anything, by dint of that, the amount is great, year after year but the software is not ours!

You, your software is constantly evolving, thanks to our money, and if we pay more, we can't use it anymore, and when we never sell anything, I don't find it very good.

On top of that, the subscription has just increased, I find that a bit exaggerated, although, in fact, no, it's even normal in fact, considering all the possibilities that construct3 offers, so in fact, ok, but it depends for whom!

I had to pay already 2 or 3 licenses, without ever selling anything!

I'm happy to see that my money was useful to make construct3 evolve, but it's starting to cost a lot!

So why don't you offer privileges to these people?...

Because that is not how it works my friend.. The simple answer is if you do not intend to sell your creations using it.. Then that is solely your choice to do so and Scirra is not in anyways size or form responsible for this and shouldn't have to make any exceptions on their subscription plans to accommodate those that do not use the software. I one doesn't want to pay that amount on a yearly or monthly basis.. Then simply either cancel your subscription or do not buy a subscription to begin with.. It's really that simple.. Scirra isn't forcing you to either buy a plan or to continue your existing subscription. Hope this answers your questions. God Bless! ;)

  • Scirra has no way of knowing if you’re making money from your personal subscription or not. If you’re not making money from your games, then either you see the tool as a hobby or you aren’t marketing your games well.

If you see it as a hobby and you’re not making money, then surely the expense is a luxury? Construct isn’t a utility like water or gas, at that point. You always have the option of not renewing your license and find another engine.

If you’re not making money and that’s your goal, you need to change your marketing strategy and make sure your games are quality.

Construct is a wonderful tool that’s designed by a small, hard working team, and the subscription keeps their lights on. And if someone can’t afford the license, that isn’t Scirra’s issue.

Am I happy about the price change? Yes and no. Yes, because they’re doing what’s best for the long term health if the company, employees, and production of their product. No, because who wants to pay more? At least those of us with a current license are being grandfathered in. And not being shafted like a few companies I can name.

  • Ok, they can't know, it's true.

Of course they are a great little team and their software is excellent and surpasses most if not all engines I know!

Yes, it's a hobby for me!

What I have a problem with the concept, not with Scirra, is that you pay for something, that you use it ok, but it's an investment that won't bring you anything, if you don't do anything with it.

And honestly, really, 100€ per month is not much, for those who know how to use and sell it well, 100€ is nothing for them!

But those who don't do anything with it, who don't do business, too bad for them!

So imagine, you've been a subscriber for 10 years, but you never sold anything, of course, it's your fault, not theirs ok, but you will have consumed about 1000€, which will bring you nothing, which will allow Scirra to improve their software which will become more and more powerful, but the software will belong to them and not to you, even though you have contributed!

Maybe we should make different licenses, I don't know....

I'm just raising something, that is to say, pointing out something that bothers me in itself...

And it would be nice if they could answer, that they give their opinion, but they may never do it!

  • The way I see it is, hobbies cost money. I'm a crafter, and I also play video games. As a crafter, I've spent so much money on clay, paint, resin, paper, ink... It's added up to so much more than $120 a year, I don't even want to think about it.

And then even when there are Steam sales, I've purchased so many games... Then there's the Big Releases for me, which are $50 or $60 per game.

As long as you're having fun and you continue to enjoy yourself, the cost of the sub is worth it. There are hobbies out there that are much more costly per year.
