Why Construct 3 goes backwards instead of forward

Casino? money? who knows? but the target is the same!
  • I'm fine with anything that uses HTML5 for good.

So does that imply that you're not ok if I want to use it for something.....evil?

  • lol!

  • This thread seems to be focused at the subscription model.

Honestly, Scirra simply needs to parse up C3 into feature modules, charge a flat fee for some, charge a recurring fee for others, and have an enterprise-like "if you make money, pay us x amount" kind of schemes.

Then devs can buy what they need from the smörgåsborg of features. (Maybe have a trial period featuresets?)

They just need to gradiate their feature list <--> pricing scheme.

Not having a basic, free version of C3 would be a very severe mistake.

  • I totally understand they have to make money. I get it

What i don't understand is what exactly leads them to believe C3 warrants a subscription when you have a market that's dominated by Unity, which is free until you make a substantial amount of money from your games, and Unreal who charges 5% of your revenue

Both these engines are far more capable than the competitors because they have to financial means and manpower behind them so in order for someone to compete they need to offer something else

So for me the lure of C2 was the simplicity of it all but there are other competitors in this area some of which offers their tools as a one time purchase

So what exactly will C3 be offering that not only sets it apart from the giants in the market but also justifies a subscription?

Right now, i sure don't see it

  • So what exactly will C3 be offering that not only sets it apart from the giants in the market but also justifies a subscription?

Everyone is wondering the exact same thing right now. But fear not. The info dribble will clear all questions and concerns.

  • * Designers focusing on non-profits - There is still a free version of C3. If you are a non profit, why not collect money for a licence by donations?

You have no idea how the scene is for experimentation. tl;dr: it's very bad. We're forced to make _way_ better things (way out of the league that any mid-sized developer, that's either a homerun or you're expecting profit loss) so we can charge money for it and earn some income. For every successful experiment (say, Flow) there are thousands and thousands of games that are NOT clones, that are NOT shovelware, that never earn a single dime, much less in donations.

I'm sure we won't be able to earn income with Construct 3 free. And it's too limited for mid-sized projects anyways. Also lack of exports.

Tom thanks for the Construct 2 reassurance. Maybe we can still use it for certain type of projects in the following years. That's pretty cool to know.

    Cryptwalker loooool

But yeah, most people are already using it for "evil" <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink"> And I'm not super OK with having an industry that's full of clones with zero innovation, just reskins. Look at the mobile market. Here's a great panorama: http://i.imgur.com/IgJInrk.png

But, honestly? I blame that on education and conservative corporations.

Scirra was (is, currently) a great "enabler". It's sad to see that in 5 years Scirra probably won't be an enabler anymore.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • I think most of the clones you see is from small wannabe game devs who think they can make a fortune by creating a clone or a half-attempt game using a tutorial someone else made and then slap some ads in it and call it a day.

  • I'm completely with you on what's to "shovelware" part.

I know most of those pretend to be indie-developers, but they're not true indie. True Indie is all about expression!

Expressing yourself without giving a damn about what the world will think of you or how much you will earn because of it if at all. That's the only freedom man can achieve in this life.

I don't say of course that Indie should be low-quality. For example I just can't help myself when I make games too simple or leaving gameplay part somewhere behind for the sake of my hidden point - I just delete project no matter how long I worked on it. As even being in passion to express something I can't finish the project that doesn't seems to me as good playable game.

In 2011 I was a child that started to use Construct Classic and made games in my region back when it wasn't popular. I developed and released some shitty games without any thought of expressing anything. Just for fun.

I have purchased Construct 2 in early 2014 and since then I haven't finished any game. It's all my self-searching ;(

There's no regret of purchasing C2 as it helped me develop my skills, understand myself and finally get to the project that I believe is the most important for me. So even if I won't finish this one on Construct 3 because of engine's limitation (probably on export part as really interested in consoles) I still will be able to transport all I have done to any other engine. Unreal is the best engine for me to move if necessary as there's certainly no need to stay on one position with Game Maker, Stencyl and etk. My project won't be any better on any of those and so won't I.

I say let's give Construct 3 a year. We have to pay 50 dollars only for this try. Construct 2 for it's first time was rather ugly for me after Construct Classic.

I'm with you mostly. I use Unity for everything, but C2 is my go-to engine when I want to throw something together in an hour and see how it looks and feels. I can't really do that in Unity without having to do a bit of coding or changing some scripts to work with what I just tried. I'm gonna try C3 myself to see how it is, but if it doesn't really offer much except work on the go, then I'll keep my current workflow. It seems to be just fine.

  • Most of these petition and anti-subscription threads will be closed anyways

    That's actually a good thing.

  • No, the free version of Construct 3 won't do, since we cannot earn money with it.

... So the FREE version won't do since you cannot earn MONEY with it?

The irony of your post baffles me...
