• r83 introduced monochrome editor icons. I see why you decided to do this, but I personally find it kind of ugly and washed-out, and everything looks unclickable. Surely I can't be the only one who thinks this o.o

Would it be possible to just make the monochrome icons optional?

  • I don't mind them at all... to me, it looks really professional. But that's just my 2c.

  • I just think it's a step backwards. If I wanted a bland, ugly GUI I'd be using MMF or GM. C2's editor looked great and was bursting with vibrant color, and the black theme made for a nice contrast. Now the whole thing is washed out and black as death.

  • What I'd like to see is a way to change between the two different schemes.

I like the new one, but now I have to go and remember all the new symbols

for objects since that's how I usually find an object in a list.

  • I took a look and all the .ico files seem to be placed in their respective plugins folders, not hidden away at all. So you could essentially make some of your own or find some you find fitting, and switch them out yourself.

Maybe a way to automate switching out the icons by loading them from a archive or something could be done. But at the moment I don't think it's necessary.

Yeah I was snooping around the C2 folders but I couldn't find the actual editor icons. I don't mind the new plugin icons and some of the "color-coded" stuff..just the black editor icons and black folders.

  • We aren't planning any option to change the icon sets. IMO the new icons are a huge improvement over the old ones which were just cobbled together from basically whatever I could find. Give it a couple of weeks and see if it grows on you.

  • Its just all the black that's bothering me. The new plugin icons and such are fine but I have absolutely no idea why you'd want everything else to be solid black. It looks really bad. Everyone seems to love it though so whatever..

Really? They are in the exporters/html5/plugins folders.

I tried it and exchanged the gamepad icon with the icon for the new Rayman game and it worked.

I changed it back and C2 recognizes the old icon, but in explorer it shows as the rayman icon. A little weird. Will probably fix itself after a reboot or ram reset.

  • Ashley Gah. I totally misspoke by saying monochrome. All I'm trying to ask is if you could add an option to return the colors to the blackened ribbon, folder, and image editor icons.

The new plugin/behavior icons are definitely an improvement, sorry if I got anyone confused with those.

  • I likes the new ones better too. They do look professional, and it's kind of refreshing after all those eye-hurting colors. If you like the old ones enough to go "the extra mile" a bit, you can download r82, copy the old icons to some folder, install r83 and overwrite the icons with the old ones. It's my understanding that this should work. You could make a .bat file to quickly copy those after each update.

    Cheers!

Just to clarify that I'm Paulo, I'm designing the icons.

I agree with you that is a little hard to distinguish the inactive icons from the active ones. When I saw the new release I perceived that the inactive icons are not different enough, so they need to be a bit more transparent. That's something that probably will be fixed in the next releases. Despite the mockups I made, this is the first time I'm seeing the icons applied to the interface too. So there's still some tweaks that needs to be made.

Regarding grayscale icons being ugly that's very subjective. Everyone have a different opinion on what beauty is, so it's impossible to please all. However if a considerable amount of users find it unpleasant we will definitely take measures to change it once we have the required resources available.

I also made a skin proposal to go along with the new icons, but Ashley pointed me that there's a lot of technical difficulties that would make it extremely time consuming to implement it right now. So it will be postponed to a future time.

I also proposed to put all the icons in a single strip to make it easy to manage and accommodate future changes. It would save lots of time for me not having to export hundreds of images, and for Ashley not having to import hundreds of them. Again, there's technical difficulties that make it hard (if not impossible) to implement such features. The scenario in the background is not as close to the ideal as we would like it to be. I guess this would also be the base to enable the user to customize the icons. I can't speak for Ashley, but I guess it's not viable right now.

  • Thanks for the input, and for the new icons

Now the next step is for Ashley to do something about the colors of the tabs. This is what my setup looks like for the current game. I have the tabs opened all the time, I didn't open them just now on purpose, just to take the screenshot - it's the real thing.

If anything, the colors make it MORE DIFFICULT to read the tabs . No comments on the aestethics (is that the correct spelling? probably not ) of it.

I would suggest either two colors (one for event sheets and another for layouts), or just one color, but show a small icon on the tab (layout or event sheet) so I don't have to add an E or L at the end of each event sheet or layout

That said, remember that I'm only trying to help make this product better

    Thanks!

  • Animmaniac is right about the technical difficulties, right now without spending too much time on cosmetics we basically have to stick to one icon set and one of the currently selectable themes (of which Windows 7 is the only one I think looks remotely good, but the others are provided since our UI library makes it easy to choose between that selection).

Geo - I thought the multicolor tabs was a nice touch, because if for example you want to select the "LevelWonE" tab you can just look for the yellow one, rather than having to read a bunch of grey tabs. On the other hand, perhaps it would be clearer to have just two colors, one for layouts and another for event sheets? I'm open to suggestion on UI changes, it's just generally only small things like tab colours are practical to change, without spending loads of time designing a themeing system.

  • I also has some UI suggestion:

    1. Please put the project PATH (or at least Project filename) to the windows title, for example :

    For single capx file: C:\Dropbox\Scirra\MyProject\SexyAnimeGirlPlatformer.capx

    For Project folder: C:\Dropbox\MyProject\Scirra\SpaceClown.caproj

When we switch between layout / event, it should automatically update the title respective to the project,

This will make it easier especially when you have multiple project open at the same time.

    2. One project should share one color, this will make it easier to distinguish multiple project opened at the same time.

    3. I agree with 2 color suggestion for Layout & Event instead of multiple color like right now.

For example, we have 3 Project open at the same time:

    Project 1: Red

    Project 1 Layout: Light Red

Project 1 Event Sheet: Slightly darker Red

(or a different saturation of red, basically it should keep the hue to distinguished it from another project)

    Project 2: Blue

    Project 1 Layout: Light Blue

    Project 1 Layout: Darker Blue

    Project 3: Green

    Project 1 Layout: Light Green

    Project 1 Layout: Darker Green

Or this is optional and if we want to be fancy: user can choose their own project color and save it with the project,

in case they don't like the random color assigned to the project.
