Don't miss out on the latest and greatest new features in Construct 3
Notes
It's the start of a new release cycle, and we have a big release for you this week! Starting things off, Construct now has initial support for 3D collisions! This means the usual collision checks like 'On collision' and 'Is overlapping' take into account the Z axis, whereas previously it ignored the Z axis entirely (handling collisions as if they were 2D). Currently this only checks the 3D box around objects, but it includes 3D rotation, the shape setting of the 3D shape object, and the collision polygon of 2D objects like Sprite when using 3D rotation. Most notably 3D model currently just uses the 3D bounding box, but we're hoping to improve things there soon. This is still enough to open up features like jumping between 3D shapes and 3D movement behaviors. You can also see the updated 'First person platformer' example which now uses true 3D collision detection rather than emulating it in the event sheet. Note however enabling 3D collision detection is not a backwards-compatible change: therefore there is a new project compatibility setting to opt-in to 3D collision detection. Existing projects continue to use 2D collision detection for backwards compatibility, but new projects automatically enable 3D collisions.
This release also includes lots more updates for 3D model. These include new options for morph target animations, a default model, unique icons, and import updates, as well as some bug fixes and an optimization.
There's also a useful update for File System: on non-desktop platforms, this now allows using the special 'current-app-data' picker tag, saving files to the Origin-private file system (OPFS) - essentially browser internal storage for files. OPFS has broad browser support, so it provides a way to use File System to save data in browsers like Firefox and Safari, even when they do not support the picker dialogs. We've chosen the special picker tag so that if you then export your project for desktop, it then saves all the data to the system directory for the app-specific data. This means you now have a fully cross-browser/cross-platform way to store data with File System, which may be a useful alternative to Local Storage. Note that the existing Is supported condition now may be true on platforms where it was previously false as it can now use OPFS - if you previously used this condition to check if picker dialogs can be used, switch to using the new Pickers supported condition.
Finally there's a batch of other changes, such as specifying a color for ambient light, an update for the
