• We want people to just rate the games. Then the bad stuff sinks to the bottom and the good stuff floats to the top.

Note that the rating system is rep-weighted. If you have lots of rep, your vote counts for more than someone without much rep. So the system counts the feedback of long-time users as highly significant, whereas someone with a new account's rating is relatively insignificant.

  • The arcade is being redesigned by Tom at the moment.

The new design should have more categories, one of which will/should be a "laboratory" where examples/tests/first time uploads should be put, imo, without ratings as it is more a ground for experiment/learning where comments are more valuable than a "X stars rating".

What could be done once the design is up, if users try a game that falls into the lab category but was uploaded somewhere else, rather flag/report to mods so that we can move it rather than "destroying it".

IMO, not everybody knows or can afford hosting and despite what's been told in this topic, having a game uploaded online (in the arcade) when you're a complete beginner is a first step in learning game making. Even if it is in a "misc" category with no ratings.

  • Concerning the redesign, wwould it be possible to have a closed and open beta section?

  • The lab space is a great idea, so people can experiment safely, but for people who want to upload their finished ghost shooter, I think a greenlight system would be more acceptable than an elimination one...

We could create a small poll place where everyone can upload their entries, and from there the monthly best ones are upgraded to the arcade. The number of games on the arcade could also be limited, like 30 of them, so it could change from time to time.

  • sved

    thats a good idea

  • How also adding reputation required. If you don't have 1000? 2000? reputation. You can't post a game. The point level should represent some level of activity with the community.

  • I think limiting the numbers would not be a good idea, it's all about encouraging users to make games and show them off..

I do think a minimum rep level would be wise, as I think some are using the Arcade as back door for spamming...

  • When I see a tutorial game, or a tutorial game with new graphics, or a example game or example game with new graphics.

I tear into them, 1 star them and tell them that they aren't learning anything by just uploading something. That's not coding, that's not creating that's just wasting your time and ours creating crap that no one wants.

I suggest, that sans regulation - you just rate it low and tear them a new one. Maybe that will at least filter some of the trash that's on there.

Please don't tear into them - we want to keep the community a friendly place for everyone!

  • maybe you could add a newgrounds style rating to the arcade...

if the rating is to bad, the game is kicked out of the arcade automatically and the user is notified

maybe one day we'll get online storage. rather than deleting it can go into the user's storage instead.

  • You don't kick beginners in the gnads to make them learn, when you could emulate the whole pack by showing goals.

We need a small pool, a big pool and a trophy shelf.

    Yeah I agree!

Nicholasgolden, when I see a hater, I tear into them, rate them 1 star and tell them to stop hating.

  • There are several variations of the demo games for sale in the Windows Store, too. This guy even got at least 9 people to pay $5.00 for it:http://www.greatwindowsapps.com/app/space-blast-galaxy-rescue

  • sbucci : That is scary :/

And since this game isn't his creation, I think Ashley or Tom can make something against that.

    But that scares me

  • I have an idea .. I don't know if someone else said it but i am going to ..

The idea is based on ranking .. If the ranking goes below 40%, Staff are informed ..

They go check the game and see if it worse to get deleted or not .. I'm sorry if this was someone else's idea.

  • Some of the "s"crappy games are the best! My daughters and I roll with laughter. With that said, people should know when and when not to post their games. Sweat a bit before you decide to press that darn upload button. If you want to make a buck, then your game should not suck. Hey, that rhymed. It does make the OK games seem quite great.
