Adobe set to cease Flash Player

A good blog by Ashley regarding Flash vs. HTML5.

  • Not only that but it also looks like Microsoft are giving up on Silverlight! HTML5 is definitely the future :)

Edit: as for Adobe, I think it's just the mobile Flash player they're discontinuing. I think they're going full steam ahead with the desktop Flash player - but if they're abandoning mobile for HTML5 how long is it till the desktop Flash player follows?

  • Yes, it is the mobile they are ceasing, but I believe the writing is on the wall and in time HTML5 will just take over. Adobe is slowly like a boa constrictor strangling Flash. I think you guys are just freaking them out with C2.

Silverlight, ah yes, the launch parties were a lot of fun :D I still have my complimentary dev kits in my bookshelf.

Flash was at its total awesomeness in the mid-late 90's and several years after that. I do think it still has its uses today, but man, HTML5 is just so versatile. There is so much one can do with it.

  • If I read correctly Ashley's link, the news about dropping silverlight is half a good news.

Indeed, they are dropping it, apparently, in favor of another microsoft proprietary stuff "Windows RT", not to the profit of WebGL for example.

The really good news would have been a single standard (webGL, OGG support... meh, sweet dreams, but not yet). Apparently, they are still not up to it.

As far as flash for desktop, I have a friend who work in research and told me flash won't die that easily (on server side for example).

Anyway, it is nice to see that HTML5 IS recognized. That seems to prove that it was the correct bet.

  • The future is not html5.

    I'm sorry to say that,.

  • No problem Urled, you have the right to be wrong. <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

    Hahaha, awesome answer :>

  • The future is not html5.

    I'm sorry to say that,.

As for me, I've invested heavily in Flash technology and wouldn't want it to go away completely. But the arguments against it were compelling enough that I've started to switch my development efforts.

I've heard a lot of reasons outlined by amateur and professional programmers and developers why HTML5 is the "future" (in a relative sense as there will always be something bigger and badder later on).

I remember when Microsoft (certainly a respected an recognized leader in the tech industry (?)) said that the iPhone was going to be a complete failure.

I am curious to know why you believe HTML5 is not the "future" at this time.

that sir, sounds like a t-shirt...lol [feverishly opens a spreadshirt account]

  • We've always said Flash is going to die, but it will be a slow painful death. It's got such a gigantic web footprint that wont fade quickly, and also there's a TON of professionals out there whos livelihoods depend on it. They will squeeze it (understandably) for all it's worth. It's hard to say when, but if we try and look 10 years into the future which in terms of technology is a vast amount of time I really can't see any serious new Flash development going on.

  • How bout animations, Flash is still the master when it comes to that.

  • How bout animations, Flash is still the master when it comes to that.

As for animations, Flash is still the best hands down - at this time.

The tools for HTML5 are getting better at a much faster rate than when Flash first started out in my opinion and the distribution potential dwarfs that of Flash when it first started.

I believe Flash has its place such as Stage3D on the desktop. For mobile, Flash is way too bloated. However, it is possible to get some simple 3D with HTML5 as well. Here's a link for some experimental 3D.

Again, it's a tool that you can add to your arsenal of dev weapons.

  • Oh yes, I almost forgot, this news probably matters the most to those developing for mobile. Mobile web usage has outpaced desktop. As well, Windows 8 will have limited support for Flash and possibly other plugins.
