i dont know much about programming but here are some freewares which can help in game making
Best background maker :- "stile" http://www.harmware.net/stile.htm
Best search tool :- "Everything search" http://www.voidtools.com
Best svg animation :- "Beez" http://beez.sourceforge.net/
Best vector graphics :- "Inkscape" http://www.inkscape.org/
Best drum background :- "HammerHead"http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/
hope it help you.
That's my tools:
3d studio max 2009
Photoshop
AfterEffects
Ableton Live
Reason
SoundForge
i' know they are expensive
I use GIMP for pre-processing effects, and that's about it...
i've tried to use a Gimp but after years in photoshop i just couldn't used to interface...but still gimp as a free software is very powerfull tools for graphics
I find GIMP's interface annoying and counterintuitive and I've never really used anything else, but hey, it's free.
Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.
Blender, Paint.NET, and Code::Blocks with MinGW for anything C++. And Construct, duh.
Edit: And seconding Everything as a search tool.
Here's a couple tools I've found useful:
Um, can't think of any others I'd recommend right now that haven't already been mentioned. I've heard some good things about Graphics Gale if you want a program dedicated to pixel art. I haven't tried it myself, though.
for music i recommend Rebirth - it's classic and it's free now

why do audio programs always seem so overwhelming to work with? it's like the steep learning curve is more of a wall than a curve ... anyone here want to teach me?
i use graphics gale for anything pixel art
maya for anything 3d
and nothing for audio ...
I use Cubase LE for audio (when I need an audio editor, which isn't that often). It's very good, getting close to professional audio standards. I can see how it would be tricky to learn as a beginner though.
I use GIMP and InkScape for graphics, and of course I use Construct for making games.
Why does it suck? I find it better than ever :D

They screwed up all of the selection tools. I prefer being able to instantly drag and move the contents of my selection rather than having to finalize the selection and then hold control-alt.
I use Photoline(http://www.pl32.com) for image editing. Fast, cheap and stable. Great alternative to Photoshop or Paint shop pro.
I'm trying new softwer from time to time, but I use mostly photoshop cs3, scetchup pro 7 with v-ray plugin, fruity loops 7 and my brain( quite good tool). besides that i realy love to use pen and paper.
