We're just 1 week away from Ludum Dare 27. If you're not sure what Ludum Dare is, it's an accelerated game development event held every 4 months, with 2 concurrent competitions taking place over 1 weekend. Full rules can be viewed here, but here's a quick breakdown of the competitions:
Personally, I've found these competitions to be a great experience. It tests your abilities, and finishing a game in 48/72 hours is a great feeling. Last event's keynote does a nice job of explaining why you should participate. If you have the time, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot. I hope to see and play entries from many of you.
To give you an idea of what types of games are possible in these competitions, check out the below links to winners, and the entries I found using Construct 2:

BTW , kbdmaster = Whiteclaws
Theme vote week is on: vote now.
Final round of voting is live.
I can't believe there was such a high percentage of themes from the first 4 rounds were in the negative. I'm guessing people are being really picky since there was so much hate for last LD's theme.
I'll be participating again, lots of fun the last couple of times.
It seems quite likely that 10 seconds will be the final theme, considering it dwarfed all the other themes in the first rounds. Maybe people will do something different for the last round, though.
zatyka: well to be honest, I haven't been convinced by most of the themes in voting so far. I see themes that have been proposed during the last LD coming back, and overall wasn't greatly excited by the themes proposed.
I must admit most of my votes have been 0s. A fistful of +1 and some -1 for themes I really don't want to see.
I don't know yet if I'll actively participate (I already have some others activities scheduled for this week-end) but who knows, if inspiration strikes me and if I feel I can make a game in either the limits of the compo or the jam, I'll try my best at it.
Also, as for each LD, there is an "alternative" theme challenge. For this LD it is "Tower defense vs Tower Offence" ^^ (there is even a "movement" for "Tower Potatoe", go figure ^^)

Ludum Dare post on the subject
PixelMonkey I wouldn't be surprised if "10 Seconds" doesn't even come close to winning. The nature of the voting methods makes predicting a winner very difficult.
I haven't been a big fan of many of these themes either, and was also kind of bummed that there were so many repeats from previous voting rounds, but that sure won't stop me from having fun.
zatyka: True, what matters most during any game jam is to make a finished/playable game in the end. It makes valuable experience.
The theme is a guideline at best. Respecting it might be a self-imposed challenge to work ones skills.
I think the final themes offer multiple ways to interpret them, which is what makes them good in my opinion. Not many in the final round I'd consider bad.
The previous edition (LD26) was a lot of fun, so it was an easy choice to participate again. There are some awesome themes in the final round, so hopefully something good will come out of that!
Good luck to all of you!
LD27: 10 seconds.
Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.
Hey, we're in again. Using Construct 2 for the second LD.
Here's our blog: ludumdare.com/compo/author/seconddimension
Good luck everyone
Late to the party, my PC is limping along a little and throwing up blue screens. Gonna try do something useful if I can.
The last one was really fun. <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />
Okay, first day almost over and the gameplay is almost ready. Just one or two more things to do and the game can be played functionally.
