  • i have and idea would most definitely benefit growth in the development of games using construct.

    the idea is to provide basic custom game engines available publicly.

    i can understand why some prefer to keep their code private and to their eyes only but i'm not proposing that one share their unique secret to success but rather to provide general common knowledge that most experienced developers already have so that the hindrances may be taken down for those who aren't educated in the basics.

    this will not only provide new and inexperienced devs the opportunity to learn by seeing code that works as well as to play around with code to see HOW it works but this will also guarantee a certain level of quality amongst the games that will be created using construct and from understanding the custom game engines to applying the custom game engines, the growth will come from not having to figure out how to implement what already exists but rather to explore new ideas.

    the custom game engines should probably go in the wiki, documented and all

    p.s. i realize that it seems like i'm asking for a free custom game engine and maybe i am but that's only because i don't know everything <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /> i do, however, genuinely believe in what i have said in this post to be a potentially powerful and permanently, quality improving idea

  • I also was considering this, when I wanted my personal project to be a point-and-click adventure. The base engine would be first built and shared, then the game upon it. However, I am specializing this game into a hybrid platformer RPG of sorts; original style of game makes for not-so-dynamic game engine. However, if any programming ingenuity occurs, I'd naturally love to share the tidbits.

    I hope the Construct community continues to be open about its event code.

  • Part of the reason I implemented templates was so people could see how to get going with the basics. For 1.0, this could be expanded in to a library of simple games which new users can look through. For example the coding behind RTS games is not meant to be some darkly kept secret, everyone should know about the features behind it - so when someone requested it, I added an RTS template to show how it's done. So I am very much in favour of the idea, do you think templates are a suitable place to have these engines?

  • Definitely. Template sounds essentially the same.

    Though it may be argued that engines can be more complicated, but I guess the template section can be split into simple, and advanced.

    well in that case maybe the templates should be downloadable (maybe at a later date when the wiki has matured more) based on what the user wants rather than have them packaged with construct and hardly ever touched (i hardly ever look into templates but that may just be me)

    in the end, templates are definitely what i'm talking about when trying to set a certain standard of quality among programs created with construct

  • Right now I'm working on an engine for games similar to Flashback, Blackthorne, and (the original) Prince of Persia. As soon as I have it finished I'll be making some documentation for it and releasing it publicly.

    I hope to not only use the engine to make my own Flashback-style games, but hopefully other people will pick it up as well. Flashback is one of my most favorite games of all time, and there definitely needs to be more games like it.

    How is that all coming along deadeye? Just asking because I have been talking to a few friends and we have started work (together) on a platformer project... in ways very similar to Flashback. It's weird that I found this post because it was only yesterday or the day before we started discussing it. I have already drawn the running frames for our character (10 frames wooo!) and have started playing around with the platform movement.

    So far, I am not REALLY happy with the way the platform movement is working out... I want to just get it basically functional for now and worry about tweaking after I have all the animation frames done for standing, kneeling, jumping, climbing etc.

    If you have made some/any progress on the "Flashback" engine I'd be keen to take a look/help out/etc.

    I think we are related.

    It's all good though... I'm slowly working it out. Having a few weird problems with some animation transitions... mostly worked out but some aren't still working quite right. I'll finish all the animation sequences and put them on my character sprite, THEN worry about getting it all working.

    If I get stuck, I may hit you up for a little assistance!

  • yep, just gotta break thru that barrier that makes you lose interest and think only about that game you are working on. Its hard, I cant even say this myself because my lazyness/boredom takes over all the time as well.

    It makes a little sense to build templates, before a full blown game as well.

    Especially since Constructs still beta. Speaking from a newb point of view tuts on each template would be a good idea too. BTW the Ghost Shooter tut was wonderful. Now, one other thing, there's dozens of types of engines, you should probably agree on specif types before making templates.
