  • Well, MMF and Construct are both tools toward the same means. It's like when my brother argues over Ford versus Chevy. My car goes, and so long as I can afford it and know how to fix it, I'm good.

*Raises hand* I myself am a Multimedia Fusion convert. Sure Construct is still early, EARLY early beta, but it's a project I'm willing to invest my time in. I feel that I am somehow part of its development, and right now that's more interesting than MMF, where I'm just an end user to an already established product.

Besides, if it really came down to the open-source argument (which I find to be entirely arbitrary) I'm sure there's a donate button well within reach with which I can vote with my wallet. Clickteam has a good chunk of my change already for MMF1 - and considering the lack of support I received on numerous occasions from CT and their community, perhaps the money I would have spent upgrading to 2.0 will be better applied to the development of a project I can actively participate in.

  • Wow... I forgot that I had a TDC account from a while back... I only ever submitted an all-purpose level editor, and clickteam didn't fix the active picture memory management like I suggested so I ended up scrapping it...

If you want to support Construct, you simply build momentum (awesome games/demos) and show them all off at the 1.0 release party...

Since our community here seems so enthusiastic and active, you guys think its time we start an IRC channel?

  • Howdy folks:) Just wanted to share my point of view on all of this. First i removed all of the out-of-topic comments on the ghosthunter download page. Arguing between mmf and construct is really silly if you think about it. Since all we are here for is to make cool games.

The tools we are using be it may a clickteam product, construct, flash or c++ should not make a difference at all in my opinion. Now for the demo that was uploaded, i see why some people go on and jump in defence mode since it looks and plays like a simmilar demo that was made for construct but the idea behind this was to show what mmf2 can do now, it is even open source so people can see how it was made, that in my opinion is the difference. If this was a demo for a game that was in the making or if it was not open source that would have been a different story as it is now however i think everyone should just see this as a technical open source demo.

That's all, i do not see any reason why our 2 communties can't help eachother and share our creativity. Instead of fighting lets work together.

    Have a good night folks,

    Rikus

I figure I'll poke my head in at this point and say 'I agree'.

I also noticed the very apparent similarities between this tech demo and the one for Construct. The fact still remains, however, that it is a tech demo, and is not intended to be a full fledged game at all.

The bickering that has emerged over the two I do not feel is necessary in the slightest, and I cannot see it achieving anything other than potential division between two communities that have the same goal; to create games.

  • It's like, totally beside the point but the Ghost Shooter demo for Construct is open source. It comes as a template with Construct. Just sayin'.

    Also:

Thanks for stopping by to tell us this. I totally agree. But perhaps you could mention it to your own forum members as well.

    Have a good night,

  • Try Construct 3

  • *sniffs around*

    Rikus.

  • Good work on the rain demo. Theres really no better response to this argument.

  • Ok.. My jaw just dropped when i saw the first message in this topic. I got really REALLY dissapointed in the whole mmf community. WHY would they choose to make an exact copy of construct's demo, eccept to show "Look, we can do the same thing!" Is it really that hard to come up with an other way to show of the pixel shader effects? And the worst part; They didn't even MENTION construct, scirra or ashley! Now he's put a little comment saying "This is not an original idea, so take this open-source MMF2 HWA tech demo as a simple tech demo and not a complete original game", but it still doesn't mention where it comes from. Something like "Keep in mind that this is just a copy of a demo made in construct" and a link would be better. I must admit i'm a little dissapointed that i missed the arguing, and that i can't even read it, but it's probably better like this. I would probably break my computer in some way otherwise. This is the drawback with communicating on the internet. You can't give people a good old punch in the face when they deserve it.

Well.. since you all have had time to calm down this post might seem a little.. primitiv compared to what you are writing right now.

  • "WHY would they choose to make an exact copy of construct's demo, eccept to show "Look, we can do the same thing!"

They? As far as I know it was made by one person?

  • well.. He then.

  • Well, to be honest, I don't mind they ripped off my demo. It's not like it was a substantial game. The only two issues are this.

    1. They didn't, and refuse to even mention Construct or the original Ghost Shooter demo, even on other websites, true to their censor-their-own-forums approach. Rejecting Construct from the Clickteam-run Gamebuilder site is another good example of this. If they'd just been honest and said "Here's a clone of Ghost Shooter from Scirra that shows MMF can also do this", I guess none of this would have happened.

This is trivial compared to the next point though.

    2. In Clickteam's eyes, this demo is OK because the graphics and programming are original. The fact it's the same idea doesn't bother them. It made the front page of their site.

When they were telling me (very explicitly) that they were about to sue me, the only problem they had was with the ideas behind Construct. The whole legal threats thing lasted a long time and they even rang my mum (??? I'm over 18 and can deal with this myself thanks). They obviously feel strongly about the protection of ideas.

Endorsing the 'Ghost Hunter' demo is blatant hypocrisy and if they don't retract it, they are absolutely crazy.

  • It's like the whole YouTube thing... for a long while you could just post whatever you wanted as long as it didn't contain nudity. YouTube was pretty much of the stance that the users were responsible for what they uploaded, whether it was copyrighted or not didn't interest them.

It seems like TDC and CT are of the same sort of mindset here. They're hiding behind the fact that it was a user who made this. I know it hasn't been stated explicitly, it just seems that way to me. I'm not saying it has to be taken down, because it is a "good example of what MMF HWA can do" or whatever, but an addendum or disclaimer explaining where the idea came from is in order, I think.

There are legitimate gripes to be had here. "Let's not fight" is one thing, but "You don't fight and we'll keep doing what we're doing" is completely something else. Why censor the gripes, Rikus, and not bother addressing the issue on your own site? (On a related note, few people late to the party have posted some Construct comments since you deleted them, you might want to get on that )

And Ashley, I wouldn't get on Snakesoft for posting there, I don't think he's seen this thread yet.

Edit: I just realized that Sphax used the exact term "other product" when commenting about Construct... Hmm... Smells of CT bull**** to me (see Dines' edited post, more examples on page 2). I could just be reading into things though.

Edit by Ashley: Language (when am I gonna put a filter in?)
