  • I am a new game maker, and I didn't have backups on because I am using a small computer without a lot of storage. I Have been saving my project, but not as separate files. I think this costly mistake may have cost me months worth of work, but I am reaching out here as a last hope.

Here are the errors my console is reading. I was working on my game and suddenly the ground textures all disappeared, and the background turned pink.

Is there any way to recover this?

  • So you can open the project, but can't preview it? Then it's not a total loss. It's possible that some images or files got corrupted.

I’d try removing objects, layouts, event sheets one by one until the preview starts working. Then narrow it down to find the corrupted element.

But of course make sure to back up the project file first! And definitely consider doing daily backups in the future!

  • Try Construct 3

  • Send your project to ashleyahi@scirra.com and I'll see if it can be recovered. However it's worth emphasizing you should keep regular backups for any important digital work with any software. Otherwise something like a hardware failure risks you losing all your work permanently.

  • Ashley I sent the project over to that email. Thank you for taking the time. In the meantime, I will start removing things from the project, I am assuming I can just delete them from the project menu within the editor until I find the issue.

    Thank you both.

  • I managed to recover the project and sent it back to you - there was a corrupt PNG file in the project. I'm looking in to improving Construct's error logging to identify the corrupt file to make it easier to find if it happens again.
