What's the max size of a sprite?

I have some sprites that are around 4k-5k pixels wide as just a background. It won't display on mobile. I am wondering if this sprite is too big. I used to get a warning in C2 and didn't get one here. I am wondering if that sprite is too large.

While we're at it. What the best practice for large sprites like this?

Best practice:

a. Use a combination of tiled/repeating backgrounds in addition to unique, smaller sprite instances placed in a variety of ways (color, size, orientation).

b. Use tilemaps

409 pixels? I usually do not go over HD 1920 x 1080 for backgroundsprites, and someties it has to be that, you cannot tile these things.

One could slice it up into 5 or 6 smaller images I guess, but is it really worth it?. Which device cannot show a simple 1920 x 1080 image?

I think that is a typo and means 4096. 4096X4096 is the maximum texture size in OpenGL ES 2.0

That would make sense. 409 is really small.
