Well I have no idea what the science behind picking the letter is, but given how hard it would be to implement in C2, and how much it would delve into copyright, I'm perfectly happy with the way it is now. lol

Gif? Nah, a single paragraph might end up having thousands of frames, and wouldn't really get any animation benefits the file type enjoys.
