So I don't have smart phone or anything like that to test them on. Is there any other way to see how they work? Also I've been hearing that the controls for them are a little wonky like they don't measure the degrees very well

Chrome can do this.

Hit F12 and click on the smartphone icon on the left-top (developer tools window).

Then click on the tab below named "Emulation". Choose "Sensors" from the list on your left and use the "Accelerometer".
