  • Hello, i have only recently discovered this software on steam and its amazing. I have just completed the "Ghost Shooter" tutorial and i have decided to make my own game. Well, not my own game, i want to try and make a space invaders game. I think(hope) i understand the mechanics of the game enough to make it only i am haing problems starting it up. My first problem is, i dont know how to a couple things. The problem is getting the characters, like the UFO that fly along the top, the invaders that fly in the large group in the middle and the main player controlled ship. I tried creating them myself using paint but it was a failure lol. And im not sure how else to do it. Im kinda new to the game creating business. I have checked the site but not found any links or tips on how to do this. I also checked for the image themselves but i ddint find any that would have worked. I was hoping you would have some ideas on how i could get the characters for the game and any other tips or tricks or even links to things i may have missed on the site.

    Thanks for any help! <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Hey Crazy,

I guess you have already started to make your game with simple blocks, as for the animation paint is sufficient but it might be easier if you got your hands on another program to aid you. I use Photoshop currently but I would suggest you have a look at the program called Spriter.

There is so many resources out there on how to actually animate, my advice is to look at examples of how others have done it and then start experimenting yourself. Once you get started there isnt much to it, it just requires patience.

  • I'm creating a similar game myself also, called "Planet Invaders" (and I own "PlanetInvaders.com"). If you're going with "Space Invaders" be careful of copyright. ;)

Anyhow, in addition to tutorials on this site, on YouTube there's plenty of tutorials on painting and animating for games.

Ultimately I think you'd get a better response if you asked a specific question, like "How can I make my ship go to position x,y" instead of "How can you help me make my game". ;)

  • One other tip: There's a sticky post you may not have noticed, which has some tutorial videos:

  • when i was young i played a space shooter called Tyrian on my laptop. the sprites of this game are now remastered and free.

BUT i suggest you to start with colored squares and replace them with images when the game is finished.
