I'm trying to do a Fog of War style overlay, but I keep coming up with results that end up in low FPS, thus making my game sluggish. I susspect there is a way to do what I'm wanting more eleegantly, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

That is the simple version of what I'm trying to achieve, but obviously with something that is less slow.

Have you had a look at the 'lighting effects' example capx? I'm sure that would work for Fog of War in a pinch.
