I am using:
Touch|Is Touching go_down|Player|Simulate 8Direction pressing down
|Player|Set angle to 90 degrees
While moving down, the "Player" faces down, but once I release the "go_down", it flips back to its original direction.
I have been struggling for ages trying to figure it out, and I am probably going to smack myself when/if I find out.

8 direction is made so that it can point to the direction its going.
Not sure why you are setting the angle, but if you check in the behaviors preferences, there are some options for how to set the angle.
