Construct 2 Fast on One Machine but Slow on Another?

    Hello all,

First of all, if this is not the right place, please let me know and I will move this question elsewhere.

Second, I am having a bit of an issue with a new computer. I recently bought a new laptop with an i7 core, 16GB of RAM, GTX 1060, 4k monitor, the works. It runs Windows 10. It's a bit more powerful than my home desktop (except for the RAM)! However, I use quite a few plugins for my work. On my home desktop, the 50+ plugins don't impede C2's performance at all; it loads up quickly, no slowdowns over time, totally a breeze. On this new laptop, though, having all those plugins in made C2 load super slowly. Right-clicking would show a blank rectangle for up to 15 seconds before it was populated with the correct text, start times were over a minute, etc. Note that this is not the games themselves that are slow, but C2 itself. I have since removed all of the plugins and done a complete reinstall, and it loads pretty well, but certainly not on the same level as my desktop.

Things I have tried: running as admin, reinstall of the plugins, updating my graphics drivers, setting C2 priority higher. These did not have any effect on the startup and run speeds of C2. The only current fix is to not use any special plugins, which are needed for my work.

Are there fixes for this? Can I set something up that would give C2 more RAM on startup? Is it software? Let me know your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

    bump for attention

This is simply a guess, but maybe its related to what is talked about in this post, which seems to have something to do with windows 10 and C2 being slow due to some update that Microsoft made from what i understand?

//Keep in mind its simply a guess it might be something completely different.

This is a known issue with C2 on Windows 10. It has been repeatedly reported to Scirra, unfortunately, there is still no solution.

There was a long and heated discussion in that post nimos100 mentioned. As a result, Scirra released version r251 that was supposed to fix some issues with performance. However, I've been using this version for a week now and didn't notice any improvements...

For me and some other people rebooting Windows helps - C2 runs fine for some time (maybe a few hours or days). Then everything becomes very slow again.

C2 and W10 don't mix. Plain and simple. It most likely will never get fixed. Your best bet since your machine is powerful is running a VM with Windows 7, or dual boot. Neither is pleasant...but will work better if your intention is to use C2.

Some of the performance issues were addressed, but plenty outstanding as dop2000 pointed out.

There are other odd W10 behaviours I have seen which I did not get on W7, such as: image editor not loading (restart C2 fixes), exports get corrupted (restart C2 to fix), exported projects have artifacts in images (restart C2 to fix), sounds importing into "nothing" (restart C2 and reimport), copy and paste oddness, and lots of menus that fail to draw fast as dop2000 has experienced.

I am not bothering to report these issues. Not after the last bug report. Ashley closed the bug, even though it is not fixed. Ashley keeps getting the facts wrong on the bug, compiled together with all the other issues . . . Someone else will have to pick up the towel on this one. I mention this Methuselah, to emphasize your options (or lack of I suppose).

Basically, C2 does not support W10. Scirra may or may not say that, but it is the truth when you look at all the issues C2 had/has with W10 and given Scirras stance on it...it won't get fixed. Scirra should really post this somewhere officially, such as the Buy/Download page. These threads are going to just keep popping up more-and-more overtime (as more users switch to W10).

Tl:Dr; C2 is not supported by W10. It will work, but don't expect it to work flawless compared to running on W7. Your best bet is running a VM instance.

    Edit: Edited for clarity

I regularly use Construct 2 on Windows 10 and have not seen any such issues myself. If you have any issues, please file a bug report following all the guidelines with as much information as possible to help us reproduce the problem. If we can't reproduce the issue, there is very little we can do about it. The thread linked to earlier relates specifically to an issue with dialogs taking longer than usual to open in the event sheet; this should now be resolved (in the sense it is improved sufficiently to no longer be an issue; performance-related issues can never be fixed to the point of taking zero time, since it will always take some amount of time). As our bug report guidelines state that there should be one report for one issue, please make new threads for separate issue reports. The fact other issues were mentioned in the same thread is not helpful, we need separate reports per issue, as the guidelines state. I'm afraid if the guidelines are not followed, there is very little chance we can help.

I would just like to provide a counter argument to dop2000 and

I am running C2 on windows 10 laptop. 4GB Ram. 1.8GHz Dual Core CPU. On board graphics only. Literally an old dodgy pile of poo.

My project has over 10,000 events over 10 eventsheets . And layouts are upwards of 10,000 x 10,000 in size with 1000's of individiual objects in them.

    0 Slowness. None. Zip. Nada.

Only thing thats slow is saving, because I'm not saving a compressed project and my HDD simply throttles at saving time. Other than that the project is as zippy as ever. And yes, I did run this project on Win7 and Win8 even. Always the latest version.

Not all Windows 10 users are affected, which, I guess, makes it very difficult to found the cause of this problem.

Are you rebooting your laptop daily? Do you install all windows updates as they become available?

im using C2 on W10 machines (one old notebook and one modern) for 1 year, never have econunter these problems.

Just to emphasise to anyone else reading this: Construct 2 does support Windows 10. There may be bugs in some cases, but this does not qualify as the software failing to work at all. I don't want to end up losing sales over scaremongering. If you're worried if you're affected by any particular issue, give the free edition a spin. This is also why we recently added this section to our bug report guidelines:

    [quote:1whxy99r]Don't troll the developers

    ...

Exaggerating the impact of an issue, or otherwise acting as if your issue is so serious, it is the end of the world. This is rarely the case, especially if the issue is not new. Diverting attention can also end up postponing work on other genuinely more serious issues, harming other users. It is also unnecessarily aggravating.

No one is scaremongering. Not unless you consider stating facts with plenty of evidence to back it collected from dozens of computers from different users around the world with all very different set-ups, as scaremongering. Your new anti-troll law does nothing but further, discourage people from reporting bugs to you.

Anyways, Methuselah feel free to PM me and I would be more than happy to try and see what I can do for you in order to speed things up.

It did not for me. But it is worth a shot for Methuselah to try.

I also tried an elevated privilege start, and adjusting CPU Affinity.

, none of the settings on Compatibility tab helped in my case.

and dop2000 have you tried running W10 in safe mode?
