Putting together new rig. Need some advice

  • Hi,

I'm finaly puting together new rig! YES! After 5 years of hibernation with my toshiba laptop I'm finaly going to be up to date XD I need some help and advice from someone who is in to pc hardware weather my configuration is optimised for best performance/price. Thought the PC I'm building is going to be mostly for music production, but I'll need to play games too since I'm composing for those.

    Specs:

  • Looks good, but I'd get at least a Radeon HD 6850 instead of the nvidia 550.

  • Try Construct 3

    yea, Radeon all the way.

  • Cool. i'm still jugling with things thought and trying to make it most optimised for my needs. Might go with radeon. I've just checked a lot of comparisment articles. Will think about it. I'm quite keen on lower power consumption and new engine of gtx 550 ti thought. It shouws that with newer games it works better as well as in mid res which probubly will be mu monitors reses.

I've changed i5 2500K to i5 2500 sinec i'm not going to be overclocking. Will drop sata III and use sata II insted since they bit cheaper and to support sata III as good as possible i would have to spend way over 100 for p67 motherbord with Marvell 1982 with loads of other stuff i wouldn't be using ( like overclocking... thought haven't made my mind about that).

What i'm looking for atm is B3 1155 motherbord with usb 3.0 or firewire ( for external soundcard) that I'll be albe to fit in the gpu too. Any hints?

houghtzone@ no ^^'' ms is thracking those now

EDIt@ just cheking more ond radeon 6850l. Looks really good. But what about PhisyX? I'm really just comming out from the age of caveman ^^''

  • If you can afford it, get an SSD. You only need a 64GB to install windows + your fav programs on then have a bigger HDD for all else. SSD really is an excellent upgrade for any system.

    yeah

EDIT@ it's third day of me checking out and reading bout stuff. I feel like I'm going to faint XD

Seconded! Literally feels like it doubles the performance of the system.

Just be warned - I've heard SSDs fail quite regularly. If you make sure all your important files are on a different drive, you should be fine. Just remember by default Windows puts your files in My Documents etc., which will be on the same drive as Windows. Then, if the SSD fails, no worries - just pop in a new one and reinstall Windows. Of course, you should be backing up all your important files regularly anyway!

  • A few notes on SSD drives. The failure rate on newer drives is lower then a standard HD(this was not the case a few years ago) They are actually twice the size of their rated capacity and these blocks are used to replace seamlessly the blocks that can no longer be written to as they have been written too many times. Failure to write was the problem with the older drives but you could still read the data. They're rated at 5-10 years at this point which from experience I can tell you is much longer than most hard drives.

Also consider if you get an SSD consider that since sata2 maxes out at 300Megs a second if you get something like a OCZ vertex 3 drive you can easily hit the 500 Megs a second mark which means you're not getting the performance it's capable of. Sata3 maxes out at 600.

You can check out last years performance charts for SSDs here. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/ssd- ... s,110.html

I know it might seem like you're saving a little money now but in 12 months you'll be thankful if you spend the extra money. But of course that can depend on your usage. I do 3d rendering and video editing so I need all the power I can get.

If you are going to go with a sata2 setup then an OCD vertex 2 or corsair force series will give you 270-290 megs a second which is still freakishly fast.

  • Cool :)

    Yeah, i'm getting OCZ 60GB Agility 3 SSD - SATA-III - Read 525MB/s Write 475MB/s 50,000 IOPS

Thought the mobo I'm going for is probably using Marvel 1928. Those with M1982 are just to expensive atm.

I need speed too since i need to stream samples ( thought for samples I'm going to use hdd 7200 rpm 32mb in raid )

  • I've heard great things about OCZ SSD's, good choice!

    Sweet :) mee too :)

Btw do you know how to change my avatar??

Edit2@ Still not sure which gpu i should choose ><'' i was keen n getting xfx hd 6850 which is £118 but I'm keen on getting gtx 560 non-ti but it is £40 more expensive.

  • You can change you Avatar at gravatar.com, sign in there and change it.  I'll write a short post on why we chose gravatar tonight, and make it easier for people to see how to change it.

Do i have to register over there? How can i marge the accounts?

  • It works on your registered email address, so whatever email address you have with your account on here, use that to register on gravatar.  This site then hashes your email address, sends it to gravatar and they return your avatar!  It's very clever and very useful once it's set up.

  • cool, thx :)
