Is Construct 2 worth using?

  • Hey guys!

So I see that Construct can do like a lot of things pretty easily, however when I play top games in Arcade section and scroll through, one simple question is crossing my mind - "why are they so boring and so casual?" Is it really possible to make great games that(for example) can sell in mobile markets? Or it's just like there are just so few users who can make high-quality products and make it to the end? Is it because construct 2 is still pretty young child?

For expample - there are hyper drifter or hotline mayami made on gamemaker.

P.s. I really didn't wanna insult someone with my opinion about arcade section, sorry if I did.

  • Because Arcade is just a demo, there is a very small file size limit and resolution limit as well.

I don't think the arcade fairly show the potential of C2 and I agree there are a lot of games that seems to be put together fairly quickly. which is fine as I think a lot of people want to test them there for varies reasons.

However I don't think a lot of the big projects that some people are working on are on the arcade most likely because they are not at a state where they are finished, but also people might not prefer to add them there, but want to make separate websites for them. You can find some of them in the "Work in progress section" on the forum, several of them are on kickstarter as well.

Furthermore you have to take into account that even though C2 allow you to make things fast, making big games take a very long time and my guess is that most people work alone on them.

But personally I see no problems in making games like Pirates, Civilization, Warlords, Colonization and lots of other games, which are some of the most popular games titles of all times. It just take a long time

  • You can make pretty much anything, not everyone is going to use C2 to its maximum potential, people just make whatever they feel like. I haven't even browsed the Arcade section before so I wouldn't know what it's like though.

  • You are not looking where you should ...

This is where you should watch:

    Completed Creations

    Works in Progress/Feedback Requests

You can even make 3D games with Q3D Plugin

    Have fun

  • If you look at sites like Kong, what percentage of games are pure junk? Honestly, I'd be too embarrassed to show my face again if I published a lot of the rubbish on there. Is this Unity's fault, or GM's, or any of the others?

  • the Scirra Arcade definitely needs an update!!!

    @Tom

    Any news on this?

    Thanks for your opinion!

I do think this raises a good point; not to knock the games in the arcade, but if I was a new customer still deciding whether or not to use Construct 2, I might be put off by the quality of some of the games on there and dismiss it as a program for "casual" games only.

Definitely more could be done to champion the games that show off the really amazing things Construct is capable of: there's a list somewhere of C2-developed games that have been Greenlit on Steam or are awaiting it, which would be a good place to start.

Bottom line, and to answer OP's question, I've used a lot of game-making software over the years and C2 is beyond a doubt the best. It's a powerful, well-supported program with a great community, and it's capable of pretty much any sort of game you want to make (as long as it's 2D, ofc ). You certainly can undertake big, professional-scale projects in it and many people do, but that aspect just doesn't seem to be promoted as much as perhaps it should be.

  • Beaverlicious we know don't worry! Just got a lot on our plates at the moment.

  • Tom

No problem buddy! It´s just that the screenshot you posted once look really promising and I can´t wait to throw my stuff out on Scirra as well!

  • Unfortunately it's on ice at the moment, I'm sorry I'm working on something else which should be out soonish. I know how important the arcade is to a lot of people, and how it's really not up to the mark at the moment!

  • lolpaca, thanks for the comment, it helped a lot!

  • Ashworth If I spent a ton of time making a high quality game that I intended on selling, why would I put it in Scirra arcade for free? I think this is why you see less polished games on there; people generally want to be reimbursed for spending large amounts of time working on something. IMO the Scirra arcade is a great place to demo ideas, test, or give away games that you aren't trying to monetize. There are also a lot of entry level people starting out and playing around with construct as their first game engine. You can't just expect AAA games from it without having experience.
