It's good practice to have up-to-date graphics card drivers. Old drivers can cause display glitches, especially in the Layout View, or run slowly. Sometimes, updating your drivers can fix this. Also, some browsers don't use your graphics card to render unless you have the latest drivers. So here's how to update to the latest drivers.

If you got here from Construct 2 itself, scroll down to 'Manually identify your graphics card'!

Try Construct 2's update link

1. Make sure a layout is open. Create a new empty project if necessary.

2. Click the blue 'i' in the top right.

The About dialog should open, and identify your graphics hardware, e.g.:

3. Click the Check for driver update... link.

Construct 2 should open the driver download page on your graphics card manufacturer's website. Follow the instructions on the web page to install the latest driver. You might also be told you already have the latest driver, which is fine - you can stop there. If it goes ahead and updates, it might involve rebooting your computer. Hopefully, by now, you're all done!

However, Construct 2 might not be able to detect your graphics card. If it can't detect, you'll have arrived at this web page. Don't worry, follow the steps below to manually identify your graphics card.

Otherwise, manually identify your graphics card

You can usually see your graphics card's name in Device manager.

On Windows XP

1. Click Start, Run, and type in devmgmt.msc. Press Enter and Device Manager should appear.

On Windows Vista and 7

1. Click Start and type devmgmt.msc to the start menu search box. Press Enter and Device Manager should appear.

Now Device Manager is open

2. Expand Display Adapters, as shown.

Make a note of the name of the display adapter there. Common manufacturers are nVidia, ATI or AMD (AMD bought ATI) and Intel - these should appear in the name.

Note: you can right-click the display adapter and there's an 'Update driver' option. Unfortunately, it doesn't always give you the latest one! See below to get the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

To get the very latest driver, you should visit the manufacturer's website. Below are some links for the common three manufacters. These are correct as of June 2011 - let us know in the comments if the links become out of date!

ATI/AMD

Intel

Something else?

If it doesn't seem to be one of those three, try posting on our forum with your display adapter name - we'll see what we can do to help. Alternatively, try your favourite search engine. Search for the display adapter name and add "driver", and see if your manufacturer website comes up.

Note: graphics card drivers sometimes aren't available inside Virtual Machines (VMs), or in Windows' "Safe Mode". If that's the case, it may not be possible to install graphics card drivers.
