  • cesisco all the world generation code is in one group - it's called 'world generation' or something.

Basically, I resize a grid of random noise with bilinear (smooth) filtering, then threshold it to black and white. The reason it never blocks the player is because the threshold favors white more than black - this is controlled by a variable (forget what it's called).

Ok thanks, i'll dig into it one more time.

  • Great game sqiddster, as usual ! <img src="smileys/smiley4.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Really nice!

    The level generation is epic.

  • So, the path does get obstructed sometimes. In fact this is virtually only way to lose, when you wind up in a pit or a dead end and have to backtrack into the lava or wait to die.

mentioned in Go Faster's arcade comments that you can figure out when a dead end is coming.

What tips and tricks have you all learned to either detect dead ends/pits or otherwise improve your play?

  • This is crazy fun, and it's awesome that you provide the capx <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

I'm still too much of a noob to understand it all but I look forward to studying how it all comes together.

    Thanks

  • RandomExile I've found that it's mostly intuition. However some play philosophies help you avoid trouble. i.e. it's tempting to just fall and move right all the time, but this is very dangerous. Moving up and right is a lot safer but takes more skill to do quickly.

  • My primary strategy is down-right, but I'll play a couple dozen games focusing up-right tonight and share any observations.

  • I've tried twenty or so games using up-and-right, but my average score was only about 350, whereas another ten games down-and-right averaged about 550, which could indicate that I haven't developed the skill to use U-a-R effectively. I'd love to see recorded footage of you playing, like watching advanced players in Starcraft or Team Fortress.

  • RandomExile heh, I don't know if I can do that (don't know anything about screen recording etc). Keep in mind that this game is just an experiment and any game balance/fun/fairness is purely coincidental ;)

  • RandomExile an average score of 350 seems very low to me. Are you taking advantage of the wall jumping?

  • Indeed. Deaths were usually dead ends. Normal scores are circa 700, but the average gets dragged down by 150sthe and such.

  • RandomExile ah ok.

  • Do you by any chance still have this capx ? The link doesn't work anymore ( 404 ) and I'd love to see how that random level generation works

    Thanks

( I know that this thread is over 2 years old, I tried to send you a PM but I don't have 500 rep yet ;-; )

You may not have enough rep yet to PM, but you can tag users, so they get an account alert. sqiddster is still very much an active forum member, so a tag should hopefully get you an answer.

sqiddster - Is this .capx still available?
