What? I don't get the picture and why was the april update laughable at best?

The joke is that Stencyl has nothing at all to show. Who knows what the interface will look like, let alone any examples of games?

The "April Mini-Update" was just yet another repeat of what they've been saying for a long time now. "We've made plenty of progress, but we can't show you ANY of it. The Beta testing will start eventually... but YOU probably won't be invited (I'm not specifically referring to YOU )".

    Meh.

    Meh.

And what about that Terminator 2-dude and the robot dog? I want to understand the joke.

  • There sure are a lot of game makers popping up right now.

I don't give two flying fucks as long as something's released. Look at how awesome Game Salad looked in the press and now it's sorta 'meh'.

I love Construct for what it is right now. I think we'll see fucking powerful stuff being done with it - In the end, the tool is always just a tool, it'll depend on the quality that the users will push out using Construct as a tool.

I helped designing quite a few high profile 3d apps over the last couple of years and I've never _ever_ seen a developer deliver at 1.0 when he's never released anything before. This shit is just too complex and if you're not an artist or a gamedesigner yourself, face it, chances are you won't have all the answers right away.

Release early, release often and let your users tell you where they want to go. In the end, they're the ones using the application, anyway.

If you were to compare Construct and Stencyl as robots, Construct would be the T-1000 (a seriously baddass and incredibly advanced robot...err, Cyborg).

Wait, isn't it an Android created with manufactured organic skin and flesh? I thought a cyborg was a human that is augmented by robotics...?

...and Stencyl would be "Aibo", the sort of neat but mostly useless and definitely "un-baddass" real-life robot.

    Oh, ok. Now I see

I've been watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles recently, so I'd say: yeah, android.

    This man speaks wisdom.

  • The problem, as Ashley pointed out, is that they are a commercial enterprise. They have a corporate image to maintain, which would no doubt be tarnished by releasing buggy software. The mistake they made was to announce too early, building a large amount of hype and ending up with forums full of over-excited loyalists with no product to play with.

This has done a lot to tarnish there image as well, as the impression that people will get from their community is that they are very immature, whereas they are simply getting bored waiting for the release and just letting off at bit of steam in the mean time. From what I've seen, the makers of stencyl software are doing their best to control the situation and tone down the hype - locking threads that get out of control, trying to answer questions constructively, etc.. I'm interested in seeming what they have to offer.

Still, I don't think it serves Construct's interests to be going around bashing other products - it just makes the community look childish. How about we just stick to our own territory and play nice?

  • I don't think any of us should be laughing at anyone else - if they did release a good product, we'd be the fools then (but as I said, game on if they do!)

If their main problem was announcing too early, they could remedy the situation by providing screenshots, tech demos, works-in-progress, and regular updates. I still don't see why they don't do that. For me their main problem is not their community appearing childish - it's that their refusal to provide anything substantial about their product - not so much as a screenshot - makes them look like a hype machine promoting vapourware. Remember the Phantom console, or Steorn who generated PR by claiming to have invented perpetual motion? They look like them now.

As GMG said, folks, keep it civil. It's at least polite to keep it sensible and mature when discussing (potential or otherwise) competitors. I see a lot of other forums delete threads as soon as there is mention of competing programs, and you can kind of see why, but if I can help it I don't want it to be like that here!

  • Remember the Phantom console...

Oh, that augmented reality thing... I forget what it was called, but shit the video of it looked convincing! I wish that thing came out... it would have been an awesome little toy. Too bad it was all fake, or at least... mostly fake. I think it was real enough that they had some kind of prototype working, but it was jsut a super elaborate scam for money.

I think that is the root cause of their image problem, which has lead to the issues in their community (amongst other things). It doesn't make much sense to not even release a screenshot or a demo video, especially if they are nearing closed beta as they claim. If they are so close to beta, now would be the perfect time to restoke the hype furnace with something tangible, but alas it seems that they are oversensitized to it now - no mention of anything release related is allowed on their site.

Soldjah - Phantom was a home console that supposedly played PC games downloaded over broadband. The only tangible thing they made was a gaming lap-keyboard, Phnatom itself was just an empty box. They went through masses of investment and switched directors constantly, before finally fizzling out.

That wasn't the one I was thinking of...

    I was talking about this:

    Subscribe to Construct videos now

It appears it wasn't so much of a scam, but it's a grey area... all of the investement money was "lost" but there were never any legal suites filed against the guy who made the thing, since they were "satisfied" with his answers as to where the money went, and why the project didn't succeed. Sounds a bit fishy to me, and many others though.

  • Noone here is bashing Stencyl, no need to take that image from this thread. I think it's just a discussion of the releasing methods some programs have and others don't. I personally think that releasing early to gain important feedback is vital to the success of a good product; it's impossible to know everything your target audience wants.

  • Actually, deep inside me I'm bashing Stencyl non-stop..

    EDIT:

    Who's with me?

    EDIT2:

No it's not war I intend, It's just to show that majority are already getting tired of the wait.. Just so they know

    They already know.

Start a topic in their forum to tell them you are waiting. And tired.

  • Nah, it will result to nothing. They'd just get annoyed and delay much longer
