• I'm going to be at the SXSW and Austin Chronicle event called 'Game on Austin' and I realized that I didn't have a cover for Super Ubi Land (doh!)... so I drew one up last night... Going for that classic Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country feel and want the kiddos to really want to play the game.

Anyways, enough yapping. Here is the cover I drew up. I'm most likely going to make another one as development continues but just need this for now.

Here's the process for those who care about that sort of thing:

    ***Update***

Changes made from your suggestions :D

    Thanks guys!

  • Awesome!

I love the cohesive style you have going here and the fact that you hand draw everything.

It looks like a high quality, polished product and more importantly a really fun game.

On another note; I recently bought myself a Motion Computing le1600. It is a tablet PC that a lot of artists have been adopting over the past few years. They are a little old and not incredibly powerful but they have a Wacom Digitiser built in and they can run Windows 7, Photoshop, Artrage, Paint tool Sai and Mypaint.

It might save you a bit of time and they are pretty cheap on ebay.

  • Thank you!

I have a Wacom Cintiq but for some odd reason I just cannot get used to drawing on it. I will never understand why... I tried. I just really enjoy the feel of .5mm mechanical pencil on computer paper haha.

How are you liking that tablet by the way? I would probably get one just so when I'm out I could possibly sketch up some new ideas and play around with concepts.

  • Amazing, I loved to see the process behind it ;]

it?s odd to see someone not likeing to draw in a cintiq, I?m on one right now and I almost cry when I have to leave work and use my bamboo at home, hahah ;/

  • I really love your art, your clean line arts are inspired.

  • Your art is fantastic, well done!

  • Great to see that not just my wife love to draw on papper with pencil, clean up with a stabilo ink, and just scan to color... :)

  • thank you for showing the 'process' it is lovely.

all you cintiq users are making me jealous...lol. i just got a samsung series 7 slate, and i intend to move my art to a completely digital flow. but it is taking some 'doing' to get used to the stylus. practice, practice and more practice i hope, will get me where i want to be.

that poster is a t-shirt if i ever saw one. it's beautiful.

ps. the shadows on the cacti are pointing in the wrong direction from the light source...ugh. please forgive my critical eye. it's still beautiful.

  • omg you are right! I did the shadows before i did the light -___-' thanks for pointing that out. Changing that now!

and thanks for the kind words guys!

  • I have a Wacom Cintiq...

    *transforms into jelly*

Anyway, the cover looks great. Very vibrant and lively.

Two minor things I'd point out. The highlight on the balloon has an outline, which looks weird.

The "L"'s outline is also visible in the highlight.

    Other than that, nice stuff!

  • Thanks for pointing that out too. I feel like im moving 1000 miles an hour jumping from art to the game itself to fixing bugs in the builds.

Fixing that as well! If anyone sees anything else odd please let me know so I can get the cover looking right!

  • Here is an update based on the suggestions you guys were so kind enough to share with me.

I touched up on the shadows a bit for the cacti, it's still not perfect but I'm moving on from those haha.

    Touched up around the logo

and moved around the pink Slimes more towards the shrubs

  • Looking really nice!

I would absolutely love a Cintiq. Feel free to send it my way if you don't like it.

My le1600 is pretty cool to use. It only has 256 levels of pressure but it is great to sit with it on my lap while my wife watches the tv in the evenings. The battery only lasts around 2 hours though.

I am really looking forward to reviews of the Ja Ja Stylus. It has 1024 levels of pressure and will work with my iPad2. It could be the holy grail of portable digital sketchbooks. I will need to sort out my wifes Bubble Witch addiction though....

  • Love your art style. great looking cover.

  • I really like the cover art. I don't think the name "pops" enough though. The first thing I see is "super", but then it skips the rest of the text and moves down to the little green guy. Maybe make the text outline thicker/bolder?

You will want the full name to be the first thing people look at because of how memory works. People tend to remember the first and last thing they see. You can't guarantee that they will see the logo last, but you can make it more likely that it will be the first thing they see and remember.

It's a lot easier to Google "Super UBI Land" than "little green guy". Although you might want to embed that into your meta tag as well.
