Pixel Art Tutorials

  • hey guys. i think this is my first post here? hopefully there'll be many more. been using the free version of construct 2 for a couple weeks?haven't dont much yet other than tutorials, but i love it so far.

primarily i am a pixel artist and the reason i came here in the first place is because i like to make graphics for games but can't program for sh*t

but i'm working on a big pixel art tutorial and i figured i'd post it to share with you guys so we can get off on the right foot

as of now i have the first few sections done. i wasn't originally going to post this but it's probably gonna be a LONG TIME before this thing is actually finished, so i'm going to release the sections in a blog format: they'll be updated whenever I create a new one. i'll update this topic whenever i make a new part, too.

because they're pretty long and have a lot of images i'm going to link to them, but i'll give a description.

    Introduction

    finalbossblues.com/pixel-tutorial-introduction

just the introduction to the series: it outlines my goals and philosophies

    Thinking in Color

    finalbossblues.com/thinking-in-color

mostly this article covers some of the very basics: color terms worth knowing. it's sort of introductory into the next section

    Read Between the Pixels

    finalbossblues.com/read-between-the-pixels

contrast! this section goes into detail explaining how to get the most out of the contrast between your colors

    Using and Choosing Colors

    finalbossblues.com/using-and-choosing-colors

this is a big one?it's all about color choice and creating a color palette. this is the tutorial that is most often requested. so hopefully a lot of people will find it useful.

    Form and Light

    finalbossblues.com/form-and-light

on the subject of creating sprites by thinking about their three-dimensional forms and how the light hits them

i'm also using the same site for my writing tutorials and if i create any free game resources i'll set up a section for them.

i would appreciate not only feedback on these articles, but also SUGGESTIONS and REQUESTS. i have some very speficic ideas about where I want to go next, but i'm gonna leave you with an important question:

what do you want to see in a pixel tutorial?

  • +1 for emphasizing contrast. It really is one of the most important things in pixel art.

Here's a sprite I made a while back. My final version was the second from the right, then a friend of mine recolored it. Pretty big difference, eh?

What I'd really love to see is more tutorials on STARTING a sprite. Once I have an outline or rough figure of what I'm going for, it's pretty easy to finish, but I find getting that outline in the first place to be really difficult.

  • hey man that's a great image. i love seeing progressions like thatwhat an awesome example of how the colors make a huge difference.

i finished a new tutorial today. i'm glad that you want to see some more about starting sprites, because that's exactly what this covers:

  • Awesome material, Noise

I've fav'd it and will be repassing for sure!

    Great work!

  • Great stuff, I also quite appreciate your articles about writing,I'll be following your blog closely!

  • Good read, Show me more stuff tho! Some really nice sprites, it would be nice to see some of the other stuff you have done.

  • Thanks a lot for this, it's a great resource! I especially find the "Choosing Color" section really useful. Palette construction is something I still don't completely understand, but this helps clear things up for me.

My new go-to site for pixel art. Keep 'em coming! :)

  • Interesting stuff, thanks for that Noise.

You have a nice colour pallete - i really like the way you set it up. If you take requests I would personally like to see you expand a bit more on what colours go together and those that clash (and why).

P.s You have definately come to the right place :) Ive used so many engines and never really grasped much but here things seem to make sense.

  • This is good stuff. I was thinking of doing something like this, but looking at what you've got makes me realize how little I actually know on the subject.

Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to more.

  • I've been searching for materials on how to learn making quality sprites to start my project, and i couldn't even start because i don't know a thing about sprite creation but your guides will definitely help me out on my way to becoming an indie game developer.

  • What do you use to create and edit your pixel art projects.

  • I love your tutorials! I'm sure anyone learning pixel art would be quite happy to see more from you. You have a way explaining properties of color and perception to make them easily understood and immediately applied. Can't wait for your finalized work!

  • Great stuff!

  • Awesome tutorials,,, very objective and creative. thanks man.
