  • I bet you pixel had lots of ideas for games during the time he was working on Cave Story.

But you know what the funny thing is? He sat down intermittently over a period of five years working on Cave Story, to make sure that Cave Story was good.

One good polished game is worth more than a thousand ideas.

Well I don't know much about Pixel aside from him making Cave Story and being a game designer (Or was it programmer?), but I would bet his day job was what really caused the production of Cave Story to take 5 years. If you think about it, it's pretty hard to find free time to be making games on the side, all by yourself and with no resources to work with aside from inspiration. Then there's also the unpredictable hours of game design. Some weeks they'll be working for a hundred hours, others it's a normal schedule. There's also everyday activities, or other ways to spend free time to take into consideration. Granted, the game is polished, no doubting that.

  • I don't have the english version of this site.

    But can see something here.

    simpledeed.blogspot.com

Is based in give ideas, who wanna be part of it.. is invited =)

  • If you're just starting a game you should be thinking in terms of what would make a fun game mechanic. Once you have something working just using squares you can dress it up with any graphics you like. It's a spaceship dodging aliens or a canoe dodging rocks or a motorcycle dodging cars or a airplane dodging balloons or a battleship dodging floating mines. Same game but "dressed up" in different graphics. What you're describing here is the makeup you put on afterwards. If you start with an idea as inspiration that's fine but you don't have to have one to begin with.

  • Try Construct 3

  • I don't think ideas are actually worth much - it's the actual game made from the idea which is important.

Two game devs can have the exact same idea and come up with completely different games. One might be really fun too, and the other not so much. The idea didn't really decide any of how the game works, what it looks like, if it's fun, etc.

Truer words have never been spoken. Ideas are cheap, it's the execution that will make a difference.

    To the OP:

I just bought Construct 2 after playing with the demo for a while. It's a great teaching tool and a great method of quickly prototyping an idea. I am a 14 year industry vet and am the Lead Designer on MechWarrior Online (mwomercs.com). I have the Jr designers using Construct 2 (the free version) to get them moving in terms of game design and disassembling gameplay in order to make sure their ideas of a game have strong core foundations.

    That being said:

How about a restaurant game where people come in... your waitress takes orders and you have to cook them with proper timing to get the orders out in a timely manner and not burnt to a crisp! :)

  • I don't know if it's mentioned before but i some times check this site for some gameplay ideas and then think the overal concept..

    (sorrry for my english)

  • Target audience: Girls and young women on social media sites.

Stylesheet: Sweet colors (white, pink, violet, silver).

    Working Title: Manly Girly

    Goal of the game..

To have the girl character dress up the dude so that he can take her out to dinner dates, clubs, movies, etc. The social aspect could be you could meet your friends in the public places.. and show off what you made of your boyfriend (pet) lolz.. Every occasion requires different attire ofcourse which has to be earned. That is the part you can fill in yourself. Some sort of minigame perhaps?

    That could go off :p

*Micropayments for clothing and accesories perhaps..

I got plenty of ideas that i think could seriously work but not the time to do everything anyways. And ofcourse this would need work and some thinking over, but you asked for a general concept or idea basicly :p

So there you have my 2 cents worth :D

  • Doing something completely different myself ofcourse <img src="smileys/smiley32.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Get random with it. I also had that same idea with the dice. I made like 3 categories and rolled 1 time for each. I would get insane creations that sounded absurd to the max like Football + pacman lol. Or even Monopoly + Bioshock. XD

I find i come up with fun ideas when i'm not stressed. Usually they come to me when i'm not trying to hard which is odd.

Ideas also develop over time. I'm making a cow game and it originally started as a bedtime story for kids involving a common rhyme that goes like this " Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon". Eventually my idea mutated into a cow saving his family from evil aliens from outer space.

Children's books are a gold mine my friend.

    Nothing is to unrealistic.
