Hpfen (physics based arcade game)

  • Hello all, just wanted to let you know that my first C2 game: H?pfen is uploaded (after sooooooo many attempts) to the Chrome web store! Hurray!

I could not have muddled my way through this development without all the excellent community support (forums, tutorials, documentation) that is here at SCIRRA! THANK YOU ALL! (ok ok, I'm a little wound up from the game actually WORKING on the web store so forgive my euphoria - Happy New Year indeed!)

I'll be posting some "postmortem" videos and behind the scenes stuff on my website: scobot.com/blog but until then, enjoy the game at:

    chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/h%C3%BCpfen/ganbendpbfjlnfbcckljaglfaadmoagm

(I guess there will be a shorter URL for the game at some point - lol - I don't know :)

    Take care!

  • Ok sorry about not making that link "live" - you'll just have to copy and paste to check it out.

Here's some screenshots (I finally figured out how to post images!)

Here's the YouTube gameplay video link too:

  • Hello all!

Just uploaded a gameplay video of my game H?pfen! You can check it out here on YouTube.

  • Wow! Wow! Wow! Bravo!

    Nice thinking outside the box.

  • Can you tell us a little about how the game plays? I couldn't figure it out from watching the video.

I dig the art style though.

  • Hey thanks for checking it out! Since I couldn't post any pictures in this post, people may have just skipped it, so I really appreciate the extra effort to take a look! Thank you!!!

Mulkaccino: It "looks" a lot more confusing than it actually is.

    HOW TO PLAY:

Defend the ground by shooting the invading "Buff Monsters". To fire Photons, press the SPACE BAR, or TOUCH the screen if you have a touch enabled device. Score more points than the "Buff Monsters" to continue play.

Because you cannot control the "player" (that funny ball-shaped guy)as he bounces around - it becomes a test of timing your shots or using bank-shots.

You have to avoid hitting the BIG BUFF CLOUD as it subtracts points if you hit it. You can also "power up" the DOODLE BOX (that dark square looking thing that bounces around) and it will act like a charged up PHOTON - destroying BUFF MONSTERS while it is still powered up (it looses power for each monster it kills, or all of its power if it hits the BIG BUFF CLOUD).

Since I've played this game like a 20,000 times while developing it, I forget that it's not so obvious how to play! lol

I'm working on a non-WebGL version but wanted to share this version as this is the one I am fond of :)

Thank you again for the feedback!!!

  • Did you use the Canvas plugin to draw instead of keep creating new objects?

    TL;DR sorry :3

  • Love the music, love the graphics,

And I have no clue what the heck is going on :D

Would love to know if you used some sort of Sin/Cos to create the explosion pattern or if it is an animation

  • Thank you!! I totally appreciate it!

I created the music (and sound effects) using Sony Acid Music Studio, and I was pretty pleased with it too, after a lot of dead end tries.

At first I had every collision causing a sound and that was WAAAAAAAY too much! Ack! So I settled on a "music bed" and mixed in some of the sound effects into that (so that your mind would actually think there was more going on than there is)- I wanted a pinball game feel.

The game itself only has like 4 sounds - one for when the "ground" gets destroyed, one for firing a "photon", one for killing the "Buff Monsters" and one for hitting the "Big Buff Cloud" (that's the "bell" sound). And then there's the "continue" and "game over sounds" - plus some applause on the exit screen - lol.

I am so happy you like it. Hoping it wasn't too annoying but glad the audio/music was working for you!

Oh, and the male voice saying "H?pfen" is from recorded Google translate ;)

  • Thank you so much for the feedback! Here is some info about how I achieved the weird look.

    1) All LAYERS of the LAYOUT are set to TRANSPARENT in the layer properties (including the bottom/background layer). This causes the "streaking" effect - not sure exactly how it works, something to do with screen redrawing or such. A little trick/exploit that I thought looked really cool :)

    2) I'm using the WebGL "SKETCH" effect over the whole layout. This, from what I can tell, draws an outline around all objects. If objects are overlapping, then the shape of the two (or more) objects gets an outline. It's a cool effect and I really like how it looked (for the Non-WebGL version, I'm creating B&W versions of the assets to approximate the look, not the same, but there you go)

    3) The particle effects are just straight out of the box Construct2 default settings (since I didn't have any clue what I was doing lol), but I liked the look, so I just kept them! (I did "design" the particles with little shapes on the one "frame" and set the cone to 360, maybe some other minor tweaks). For the "mobile version", I have to finesse them a bit (though I am finding the collisions are killing my FPS more than the particles!)

    4) No fancy math or nuthin', just good ol' physics collisions! I like just seeing what happens. I've always enjoyed "real world games" of making up stuff in the backyard with a ball and a wall, so I was kind of going for that with this.

I appreciate the questions! Hope I answered them - happy to explain more!

  • Great use of the sketch effect. I was puzzled at first as to how you did it. I figured a ton of math and a bunch of drawing. Super clever! Really dig the style!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

    I'm hoping you got a chance to play it too <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • I finally figured out how to post some of my screenshots - lol!

  • I'm absolutely fascinated how this looks totally insane and beautiful at the same time ! I think your game is more than that, and can be considered as a true work of art !

gorgonzola3000: Thank you! Coming from you, and your awesome game, that truly means a lot! I originally thought about just keeping it this strange no gameplay, no audio/music - "screen saver" type thing - lol! But i decided to push myself and see if i could make a game out of it. I'm glad I did, i learned a lot! and judging from your comment, it sounds like I did both! Thank you!
