Battle Cry

  • I just want to start by saying what a dream construct 2 is to use, since I am a digital artist I really couldn?t have asked for a better tool.

    I don?t have a blog for this or any kind of website for this at the moment, so I was hoping I could just update my progress here. I also don?t want to make this first post very long I would rather show what I?m working on so I?ll try to keep it short and to the point.

    I wanted to start a project which I would enjoy making, I wanted it to be colorful, fast paced, addictive, funny and I wanted it to make you stop and think and solve problems along the way. I wanted to make an action packed side scroller with adventure elements within.

    So I want to eventually show the storyboards and maybe get some feedback on that, but I won?t post those for a while until I work it out some more. So for now I?m going to show off some shots of the game and some animations. I would like to put up a video sometime soon. But for now I need to rework some of the scripts.

    Anyway after about a month of work more or less here is what I have for you.

    <img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vu3nw8auy4Q/UWIfqLBZ_1I/AAAAAAAAAT4/P_xofVHO_Dc/s683/battlecry+2013-04-07+17-45-44-64.jpg" border="0" />

    <img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E2kgvJXr-xU/UWIfnzrWY9I/AAAAAAAAATo/de53dvsicXA/s683/battlecry+2013-04-07+17-45-36-55.jpg" border="0" />

    So some of the core gameplay requires heavy use of your shield, you can stun enemies for a short period of time, block and even deflect projectiles if timed right.

    Lots of blood! I have body parts with physics and some shoot a stream of blood.

    You also have a battle cry which powers up over time as you can see in this shot. There are currently two battle crys, a stationary shout that hits targets in front of you and behind you. The second shout makes you run at a high speed (basically warp a few feet) and kills everyone in a certain distance in front of you.

    *EDIT*

    I couldn't resist here is a short video of the game in action. keep in mind its very very early in development, picking up items as you can notice is wonky,I will be cleaning it up later.

  • Can anyone help me embed my video? I can't seem to get it to work..

  • I really like the art direction! Keep it up!

  • i love the effect of the characters being on a walkway, as you see both sides of the wall. i don't know exactly why but i just love the way that looks.

    seems like a whole genre of games could be made just from that.

    well done...please keep going.

  • AH yes, If you have ever seen Rayman legends they do this type of look with the walkways. its really great, It gives it depth and i agree i love the way it looks I have some really good ideas in mind for the other levels.

  • Excellent art direction and it seems your game is running very smoothly. When you put enough time to it it can move towards something extremely beautiful like : "Dust: an elysian tail" :)

    Thank you! was "Dust: an elysian tail" made with construct 2? it looks really nice.

  • This looks really good!...You any plans for a demo at some point?...

  • Good question! I do! but currently I'm working on the intro levels to the game, I'm working hard getting it to a more polished state. Then when its completed I can send out the demo, trust me I can't wait.

    it is really good. what software are you using for the graphics?

  • The artwork is being done in Photoshop and my animation is done in Flash.

  • I exported some of the animations as a gif, just so you can have a closer look. except the quality is not as good sorry about that. I'll try to re-export them again later.

    I was just wondering how your able to come up with the movement frames when animating your characters? Do you outline it as stick figures first then draw over the stick figures, or do you have another way of doing this? Its very fluent and looks well-made, got any tips?

  • The animations are done with adobe flash, the concept behind it is very easy. every character is cut up into pieces and then rigged to a bone system, the hard part is making it Not look like card board cut outs. so I make subtle movements and make some custom frames when needed, like when the shield is facing the camera or on his side.

    I'm linking a video which shows an example of the bone system at work.

    That's pretty cool, must have tooken quite some time to physically draw those sprites especially with those details. I was just wondering where you were able to learn your art skills? I'll be looking into vector art soon, but I really like your style of art, is there a name for it?

    And also have you heard of spriter? It features similar functions to adobe flash and also comes with png export, or you can set your spriter image as a scml object in Construct 2, but personally I would rather stick with the png export for now. I think in general spriting,art and animation is something I'll research on soon and watching that video was fairly helpful so thanks for posting <img src="smileys/smiley17.gif" border="0" align="middle">
