Functions are much better. There is no reason to stick with the "group activating/deactivating" gymnastic.
I seldom use groups as coding mechanisms. I always thought they were just there to organise things :P
Functions can be triggered. Groups will run at their position in the event sheet. I've used both and they both have their uses given the situation.
