Facebook stuff with no app or permissions

  • It's my general understanding that I shouldn't need an app or permissions if I want to prompt the user to share a link on facebook. Or am I wrong?

I looked at the facebook tutorial, but it's with an app. I don't want that.

I simply want a button that, when clicked, should prompt the user to share a link on facebook.

So I added a facebook object, but can't get it to work at all. Please advise what am I doing wrong.

    Issues / questions:

    1. The facebook IsReady seems like it's never firing. Why?

    2. Clicking the buttons does nothing. Why?

    3. Do I need to call Facebook.login before calling share? On other sites I can share without "logging in".

    Thanks in advance.

  • Facebook object will not work in preview..

If you set it up to put the game onto your site, then you need to still set the app up on facebook. But set it up with the website selection.

         - It will ask you for the adress its hosted at.

              - You will type example.com/Games/MyGame

         - Then all the facebook features will work..

  • This is strange, sharing the link on facebook with user prompt should (generally) not require an app or log in. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

Any particular reason why app and login are required for link sharing with user prompt on facebook?

    Thanks.

  • Im not entirely sure, only Ashley can answer that one.

Im sure its to do with facebook being facebook, there api's are notorious for being hard to work with.

They probably want everyone to give permission first.

Probably legal aswell, You could essentially insult someone through publishing to there wall, if they give you permission then its there fault..

  • Coming back to this. I can post a "share link" or "like" button on my site without creating an app or getting anyone's permission.

Why do I need an app with facebook for the facebook plugin to work? Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

  • Facebook apps will not work until you set up the app on Facebook and publish to the open web. Before you've registered the app with Facebook they'll assume it doesn't exist and ignore any calls your app makes to Facebook. Even if you register the app usually you have to enter the domain it's hosted on for security reasons, and 'localhost' is not a valid domain. So basically you have to publish to test FB apps I'm afraid, there's not much that can be done to avoid that.
