R100 *.EXE Export

  • I pulled this line off of the Awesomium website:

    "Non-Commercial Use Limitations

Cannot be used for products created with the intention for profit"

I am creating my games with the intention of making a profit. So does that mean I do not qualify for the free license?

    https://awesomium.com/buy/

No, you fall into the indie license which is free till you make the $100k

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • I'm not bothered by the price. By the time you have to pay, you already have $100,000! That's a heckuva lotta cash. $2,900 is less than 3% of that. And if you don't make that much, it's free, which it's great for us small guys.

And I'd fully agree with you if this was a one time payment fee for using the tool but it is a PER GAME license structure.

In other words, if now I develop 100 games and each brings in $1000 in a year, I will have to pay $290K!! And this DO bother me!

Anyway, there's an easy "workaround" to this: I'd just kill one of the 100 games and earn only $99k, falling again under the free indie license and saving $290k!!

Obviously, this license model is flawed since it is a per game structure compared to a company total revenue (if I understood it correctly). IMHO, it should be either a one time fee based on company revenue (eg. pay $2900 for unlimited use if your company makes $100k) or a per game based on the game's revenue itself (eg. pay $290 if your game earn $10k).

  • Good point, roberto... I haven't looked into it, I assumed it was a single per year license. Per game doesn't make a whole lot of sense. <img src="smileys/smiley5.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Per Game? I've never heard this before

  • First people cried because there was no .exe exporter.

Now that one is provided, it's not good enough yet.

Simple solution guys, don't use the exe exprorter, you won't have to pay the price asked for it.

And indeed, the pro license is per application. It's awesomium's policy.

As far as questions about awesomium licensing they should be asked on awesomium's website to prevent misinformation.

As well as cries and "oh they should rather make it..." type of comments.

  • +1 Kyatric

  • LOOl 2900 PER GAME, thats it... well i hope good look for all the indie developer, because with that kind of mentality is no more place for a open free comunity, people are going to start thinking money money money money money, and less creativity.

    WHY?

Because when you buy expensive licences, you directly start thinking to earn some money...

if you have to buy the construct2 licence who is really honest for me, PLUS 2900$ for a plugin...PLUS others future plugins or Functions....well, i prefer to stop right now my business, and become a fiherman.

Because witht kind of mentality, is no more place for an artist but only for those who eat money.

  • Don't use the EXE exporter then. I don't see what the purpurse of using an EXE exporter unless it's a really really big project you are going to sell as a stand alone game.

If that is the case - I doubt that you can make more than one game a year anyway and if that game should earn 100k - the 2900 should not be a big problem.

But yes - if you make 10-100 games a year it is a problem. But that kind of games is clearly for web or mobile platforms and not for desktop anyway.

  • Another good point lokesen... It still seems a bit silly to have it per game, but you probably won't be pumping out desktop-worthy games by the hundred every year, so it's not that big of a deal.

  • Seriously, people, I would love for someone to come back in a year's time and tell us what a big deal these 'restrictive' licences have been in practice, but I don't see that happening.

If you bolt out tens of games a year, make over $100k p.a., and are even close to worrying about the Awesomium licence, Construct probably shouldn't be your tool of choice, for a whole number of reasons.

I know everyone has dreams about shipping the next Cave Story/Canabalt/Braid/whatever, but this is a total non-issue.

I agree on the "per game" thing too. But it's probably not a real issue in the real world scenario. Hope they change it to "per game" making 100k. That seems more fair.

  • I genuinely think the Awesomium license is not a problem at all. In practice it is rare you will need to pay anything, and if you do then it will be a fraction of what you've already earnt, much like Construct 2's Business license.

Have you made less than $100K? Then no worries, you do not need to pay anything.

Have you made $100k? Then congratulations, you are already an incredibly successful game developer! You now have two options:

    • if you have one game, buy a single commercial license, which is only 2.9% of the income you've already made
    • if you have multiple games, contact Awesomium for a site license which allows unlimited use in multiple commercial applications. This is likely more expensive, but still probably a fraction of the $100k you've already made.

If you have made $100k you are most likely overjoyed with your recent success and paying a license for the technology that got you there is probably not going to dampen your spirits! I struggle to see how making $100k can be interpreted as a problem :P

  • I agree.

Do you know if the webstorage feature is going to work in EXE exports? I would really like to get some clarification on that if possible.

  • LOL if you do, a game and you sell that game, for the taxes you have the statut of a freelancer, WELL in my country if you HAVE a HUGE revenue like 100k you have to pay more than 55% of taxes, actually im employed and i pay 55% in tax revenues at the end of the year, and my salary is really really the worst salary you can find in my category in my country (belgium).

so if you have 100k and after you pay 56 or 60% in taxes and you have to pay 2500$ or more all depand how many game you have made...WELL... i promess... the money go faster than light...and in the the end im really sure you got 20.000 or 35.000$ only in your pocket.

  • imothep85 - it sounds like tax is a lot higher in your country than other countries, which is a shame. However I still think it's an unfair comparison, since if you make $100k and have to pay $50-60k in tax, then $2900 for the tech is small in comparison to the tax fee. Also, I'm afraid I have to say people can't put their prices down just because tax is expensive in your country... they still have to make money for their services.
