Construct2 AND Gamemaker - do you need both?

  • If you have the extra money, to be honest for 12$ and you get pro with android exporters. Why not ? You can still go for IOS and other exporters when they are on sale later.

mind share with us your answer ? Intel XDK vs Native.

I haven't exported nothing yet because Yoyogames having site problems because everyone is flooding their database due to this Humble sale. It's hard to activate GM right now..

  • I asked few questions on GMS forum regarding Android exports. I think you might be interested.

    What I've found out:

    1. GMS Android exports are fully native.

    2. IAP, AdMob, Push Notifications are built in.

    3. Performance is not perfect. You still have to be carefull with sprites etc. and do some optimizations.

on a reasonably modern device - should be fine

Well, C2 Crosswalk export is actually perfectly fine on modern devices <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink">. So things are a bit cleared out, but still question is what "fine" means comparing to C2 export. We'll see after they sort out things with server overload.

  • What if I'm just focused on PC games to release on Steam? I know C2 very well, but I'm interested in taking my development skills to the next level and do Unity (been doing tutorials) but I'm realizing how much more effort it's going to be to learn Unity, Scripting, and do the game I want all in Unity by myself. If C2 doesn't have performance problems on PC for a large map RPGs should I stick with it?

  • If it working for you why not? Alot of people like to have options. GameMaker is nice for something different. I find myself booting up C2 more often then anything else. Unity has 2D feature but I only look at them for 3d things. It looks like alot of work just to do simple stuff in 2D. But I am an impatient person.

I think that's my best bet. PC doesn't suffer from the memory restrictions like exporting to mobile right? So my images won't round up to the next power of 2?

  • Have you tested a portion? Do you have GameMaker to try out? If your not interested in the bundle I can give you my redemption code for pro don't need it already have pro just wanted the android export module.

Ive tried Gamemaker, it just doesn't seem like ill be as fast as I am with C2. And if theres no benefit of using GM for PC over C2, I'll probably just stick to C2. The only thing I can think of, is last time I checked C2 isn't good with online play, and couch co-op seems to not be a big focus. If GM is better for those two options, maybe I'll try it out.

  • bscarl88

Not going to lie haven't messed with those features at all. By Online Play you mean multiplayer right?

  • yup, a lot of my ideas require couch co-op and online play

  • Edited : since offer expired... i removed my previews post, as when it was 12$ was worth it, but the normal licensing not worth it really, maybe if u already know how to use GM and work around the problems it has, but then ul know if its worth it or not.

PhoenixNightly i see your point there, hopefully when r300 comes which means C3 gets released... i think that is the plan, the third-party exporters will go away from the c2 repository and will have some native compilers.. i mean i used a few game engines similar to c2 .. inferior most of times, but ... all had the compilers built in, i wish that wold be possible with C3 in future.

  • but Humble Bundle's offer was GMS pro + Android Export module for $12 (instead of $450). So it is worth a shot even if you won't stay with GMS IMO.

C2 is trully amazing - there are no doubts about that. But for such a small price it is worth to at least take a bite of "the other side". It's like with programming languages. You may be a pro with JAVA but it is always nice to have some (even a small) practical knowledge/experience in other languages as well.

To be honest I would never get interested in GMS if not this ridiculous $12 offer, because C2 is simply enough to do almost anything you imagine. For a price they sell GMS regularly I would go for Unity (as you said) if I'd plan some 3d project, but again for 2d project C2 has no competition at the moment, thanks to the intuitive editor and event system.

  • The Gm price is extremely high actually more than the 3d engine I have called Shiva 3d that exports to all platforms. But when they had html5 on sale I was like I could do the same process as I do with C2 send it through IntelXdk or Cacoonjs. So the html5 export was all I had until now.

  • I definitely should have snagged that deal while it was there, but I missed it either way, C2 seems to have everything I need, and it's waaaay too easy to work with to not be considered for my projects. I was fed up after doing my first two games, but that's because I was doing them for mobile and had HUGE performance issues with both. I doubt I'll have these issues if I'm just planning on exporting to PC (steam). Unity seems like it would take waaaaaay too long to get a project done as an independent developer. I only wanted to learn unity so I could feel like a real programmer, using an actual programming language, but I guess I'll just have to swallow my pride a little haha

  • I too took advantage of the deal just because it was cheap.

But I still hate GMS editor since when Mark had control of it.

Too VB-ish for my taste with its multiple level sub windows.

    But to each their own.
