Convert JSON format

  • I am trying to load an exported JSON file from Tiled to be used as a tilemap but I notice it's not in a format that Construct expects such as {"c2tilemap":true,"width":53,"height":30,"data":"167x-1,2x20..."}.

    Does anyone know if it's possible to convert the JSON file into this format or am I stuck with downloading and using tile data from Construct only?

  • You can ask the artist for the tiled version, or try to load the file into Tiled, and export it yourself.

    Tiled's regular format is in xml, so it won't convert to json.

  • What could I export that they could not ? I might ask them to move to editing the tilemap in Construct.

    In case it is helpful I'll paste what's in the file they gave me :

  • It should be possible to convert. That format that construct uses looks pretty simple. Just size and the data which is compressed with run length encoding (rle). Although I think you can just comma separate the tiles instead too.

    Anyways, how is the tiled json format structured? Find how to get the size and tile data and it’s convertible. Could be more complex than that should tiled store the data in a more compressed format or something.

  • Try Construct 3

    Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

    Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • Ok looking at what they gave you it looks like tmx files have way more info than we need.

    So say json = tmx file

    json.width and json.height will give you the size from that json.

    json.layers[0].data will give you an array of the tiles in the first layer. Tilemaps can only handle one layer at a time so I arbitrarily picked one.

    Now all you need to do is convert that array to a comma separated string. Something like this to convert it to a string and remove the brackets.

    data = str(json.layers[0].data)

    data = mid(data, 1, data.length-2)

    Anyways something like that. Then you just rebuild a construct style json from that and load it.

  • True I notice the similarities between the tmx and C3 format, need to try and pull tile position data from this and group it like in the C3 version. Thanks guys.
