Thoughts on Construct 3?

Casino? money? who knows? but the target is the same!
  • Right now I'm a novice programmer trying to learn Unity, and I'm doing pretty well so far. But I stumbled upon Construct 3, and knowing how "easy" is it with it's form of visual scripting instead of actual code, I figured I'd give it a go.

    On the surface it looks a lot more robust than I originally thought it would be, and due to it's ease of use I figured it would be fun to use Construct 3 for some smaller games while I'm learning how to use Unity properly.

    My question is how powerful is Construct 3's visual scripting really? It claims that it can make just about any 2D game you can think of, but due to the nature of visual scripting I'm a little skeptical. It costs $140 AUD after all.

    Are there any experienced Construct 3 users out there who can help?

  • All of the complexity is there, it's hidden under a nice UI. The claim that you can make pretty much any 2D game is true. It's robust and receives constant updates. You can easily create a game and export it to mobile.

  • What Unity is for 3D, Construct 3 is for 2D. You can make a lot of simple games, but if you want you can even create very thorough and complex games. The limit is you, not the engine. It has a very flat learning curve as well. And it even exports to all the major operating systems.

  • Construct 3 is amazing and you can make anything you want in 2d. In my opinion the line between native and Html5 are getting very blurry and I would personally choose Html5 and cross platform first.

    No disrespect to Unity, but I've played with it and I question the use of it for 2d. Things take literally 10x longer to produce.

    My 2 cets are - I only have one life and and want to spend time making more content/games, not wasting time with cumbersome UI etc.

  • At the risk of reiterating what has already been said, I only use Unity3D when I absolutely have to. Right now, I am spending most of my time on a Windows/Mac native game built in Unity3D. It is a traditional project, with 4 people working on it for three years before release.

    I do all of my contract work to pay the bills in Construct 2 and Construct 3 for HTML5. For the type of work I do, Construct 3 is about 10 times faster for 2D HTML5 projects. I wouldn’t be able to pay the company bills if I was hamstrung by the Unity2D workflow.
