IAP for Charity

  • Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to allow players to make in-app purchases, with all proceeds going directly to a third-party charity.

I figured there would be an API or something, but I can't find anything - only APIs that are targeted towards charity owners and raising funds for themselves.

If anyone knows of a way to do this it would be greatly appreciated. I'll happily build a plugin to add the functionality into Construct 2.

    Cheers

  • If you can find the right charity that accepts bitcoin, such as the Internet Archive.

You could simply display a qr code like this:

    <img src="https://archive.org/images/qr.png" border="0" />

But as I was saying on twitter, its kinda hard to scan your own phone.

  • Yeah I looked into Bitcoin, I think it's a bit niche to make any real impact at the moment (getting paying players is hard enough, without getting paying players with bitcoins).

I was hoping for something similar to Clay.io, where I could process a payment for an IAP ingame, except money went directly to a charity of my choice.

  • Hi thehen

Does the donation need to be made directly through the game app? I posted a game demo on my server and added a couple of links to some local charities underneath the game.

Now I thought you could place live links in a game, would something like that work?

Or do you need it to keep records of the donations?

Good luck with your fund raising!

  • I've never tried it with C2, but in my experience of web-dev it's stupidly hard to get a decent direct donation to certain charities - the big ones like Cancer Research UK decline everything from SagePay to PayPal; they want you to go through their gateways.

Depending on how much you want to raise it might be worth starting your own charity and then distributing the money as you see fit:

    charitycommission.gov.uk/start-up-a-charity

The best advice I've got is to directly link to the organisation or JustGiving page you want to support - It's a few extra clicks and sadly that can make or break a donation... I imagine there's a good tax reason that large charitable organisations don't like 3rd party gateways but it's sure frustrating!

PayPal had a charity thing called GivingFish or something, but that was terrible IIRC, quite shady.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Clay.io have very kindly offered to help out and I've been talking to PlayMob who are helping with the legal side of things.

One thing that's been flagged already is that an IAP would be legally considered the purchasing of goods, rather than a charitable donation. So it looks like I'll have to try to navigate that.
