  • This Engine is starting to get on my nerves

Starting to feel like I've waisted my money, spent over 2000 Dollars and my results are sad

I restarted my game over about 9 times because of some features not working correctly with others or simple problems like [[moving player to new layout plus keeping variables]] to be EXTREMELY hard to do and taking Hrs to figure out.

If you want to create a game where you jump and go straight then this is the Engine for you but other then that I recommend you look else where.

Been using this program for a month or 2 and in the beginning this engine was very easy to use but now that I advanced it feels like this gaming engine has gotten 10 times harder to use. Here are my results

Ill try back in about a year or 2 hopefully the engine is better optimized but for now Ima go buy and try a few other engines. Im use to using the Unreal Engine but My budget is only around 20,000 so I decided to make a 2d MMO game using a easy to use engine but there far to many problems for the type of project Im creating.

  • Well I made a tutorial on Local storage and I have a capx file with money systems.

Here is the save local storage basics

Here is the money system capx file

With knowlegde of both you can make your game. I tried unity trust me thats a different beast all together and it has performance problems too that you will find out about once you get into it.

First of all. What have you spent 2000$ on? Seems strange when a personal licence is 99$ and a business licence is only 330$

Secondly I have a hard time understanding how someone who is used to working in unreal engine which is far more complicated would have a hard time understanding global variables in C2. And you say that the player doesn't show up on the new layout. Do you even have a spawn player event in the new layout you're switching to?

C2 might have its flaws but in this case it is clear that you haven't understood how the engine works and haven't read the manual. So start with that and then when you have real problems come back here so we can help you out. I suggest you start here: https://www.scirra.com/manual/83/variables

And unreal engine is free and only takes 5% cut from successful games. So it wouldn't stop someone like you with a 20 000$ budget.

But anyway we are here to help and if you are willing to learn we'll happily help you out <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile">

  • Nobody can help you get your project working from watching videos - try posting a small .capx with a clear goal and asking for help with that.

  • First of all. What have you spent 2000$ on?

on "pro c2 programmers" i bet.

    as for

I restarted my game over about 9 times because of some features not working correctly with others or simple problems like [[moving player to new layout plus keeping variables]] to be EXTREMELY hard to do and taking Hrs to figure out.

Everything in C2 takes hours to learn and figure out when you are a beginner. moving a player with all his variables is ratter simple if you follow the tutorial section and manual area.

i dont want to be rude. its just a lot of people are complaining about c2... but this remembers me of some old post in c2 forums where was explained that 99 times of 100 ... C2 bugs are usually miss usages. And that happens to be so true, and it happens even to the most experienced C2 programmers.

For others who wold disagree he is not a beginner ... even though he has a lot of profile experience points those are mainly cause of the medal bug. 111 days ago he registered thats around 3 months and 1 week.. wold take around 6-12 months (if you have that kind of free time) of learning and testing capx files and ideas to fully know C2 inside out ... and even then.... you will discover things that will blow your mind.

For those who will attack the C2 advertising.

C2 front page says you can create your own game within minutes which you can... if you use the already existing templates that comes with C2. But if you really want your custom game that you dream of.... well ........you have to know its going to take time like everything in life.

But first .........you dont have to take a selfie........... you have to read the C2 manual and learn.

its sad you want to give up, but id say ... since you already gave it 9 chances.. try one more time? but before you do that... you have to stop rushing and expect results over night.... i dont know how you work, or what type of personality you have, but from the way you placed the issues .. it seems you rushed.. and trusted the wrong people... my advice... take the matter in your own hands... learn part by part, test and retest... then when you understand and know how things work together in C2 ... everything will be like a puzzle assembly for you.

and if you ever need a capx example just ask in the forum mate. Have fun... and hope you dont give up.. seems a nice project.

P.S if you have a 20k budget... and you want a MMO...what are you doing on C2? why not do it in unity ? hire 1 or 2 good unity programmers give them 500-1.5k, around 5-10 k wold cost you the 3d animated models. And the rest of the remaining funds place them in marketing when you will release your game. And hope you generate your money back.

But if you purely want to place 20k in games to make money.... you definitely taken the bad choice... id never place 20k investment in a 2d game..

Unless is a AAA MMORPG like Diablo III, i wold never be near it by a 100 meters pole. But thats just my opinion. You can do what you like and love its your cash.

P.P.S let me rephrase ... its not the issue what your are doing on C2 for a MMO... just.. C2 is mainly for 2d games(platformers/arcade/puzzles/side scrollers/ etc) ... i dont disagree that MMOS and Multiplayer RTS are possible using C2... just a bit hard then the rest of the 2d games you can make with C2.

  • You have a $20,000 budget ? Well get Buildbox , it's only 2600$ . Just add graphics , stir , and instant game .

  • "2d MMO"

Pick something easier to start, like, say.... anything else.

  • ...so I decided to make a 2d MMO game using a easy to use engine but there far to many problems for the type of project Im creating.

MMOs are one of the most complicated games you can make. You won't have it easy no matter what engine you use. I don't know what you did regarding copyright, so don't take this as an offense, but you might want to avoid using that icon on your YouTube profile before EA sees it.

I'd suggest you should take the advices you got in this topic so far. Take your time, learn how this engine works and sleep with the manual And don't forget, if you have any questions the community is always here to help.

For a while, the more you learn the harder it's going to get because as your project grows you'll have to implement new things and patch up everything that you break. I do think that Construct 2 maybe has a little bit of an image problem, in that it kind of presents itself as one of those quick and dirty game engines that basically does all the work for you - but that is massively underselling it. It's a deep and powerful tool that in the right hands you can do very professional work with - but to get it to do that you're also going to be doing a lot of hard work. You'll be doing that in any engine. Sure you can knock up a simple platformer in half an hour, but if you're going to make something more complicated construct isn't going to do the hard work for you.

  • simple problems like [[moving player to new layout plus keeping variables]] to be EXTREMELY hard to do and taking Hrs to figure out.

Moving player to new layout plus keeping variables is very easy to do, I'm pretty shocked that you think that is extremely hard, while you made pretty nice and working prototypes.

If you are used to UE than Construct 2 shouldn't be a problem at all.

IF you have a 20k budget, you SHOULD be able to make a small ORPG, maybe even an MMORPG if you find the right guy to code your server + possibly some plugins for c2 to interact with that server.

  • Took me about a year to get comfortable with C2's quirks.. you've only been using it for 2 months, which is from my perspective not enough time to get accustomed to everything.

  • Hello;

I have to agree there are some strange things about C2. Most programmers think of a character as a collection of attributes one of which is the sprite. But c2 (probably correctly) has you fill the sprite with your characteristics and then sticks it on a layout. A programmer would think "fine, when I go to the next layout I will just turn his sprite off till I want him again", but it turns out you can't send your sprite to the next layout you have to make him global in which case he is in everylayout and he is still recieving mouse clicks in invisible.

You could put him in a global dictionary and "instantiate" a new sprite for him when he happens to be on a layout--but you are starting to need to program to do this kind of thing. You could put him in static variables in an event sheet and do the same thing, but once again you are starting to have to program. So yes, it takes a while to figure this stuff out. It is easy to get something up and working in a few days, but you really have to work to understand C2. Game maker has the same learning curve and it is not as consistent.

It takes some time to learn C2 (I still can't figure out when to use wait 0) but it is well documented and very consistent and you can always get very good help for free within a few hours.

To the OP--its worth the work so stick with it. Ask more detailed sprecific questions if you have trouble.

    yours

    hi,

use unity + blox 3 plugin

    sorry scirra

  • hi,

use unity + blox 3 plugin

    sorry scirra

This looks one interesting plugin, I haven't seen it before. However Unity has a much bigger learning curve than C2 and that block based visual programming the plugin uses is not so efficient as event sheets.
